2003 mach1 help!!

Hi I need some help. I have an 03 mach1 with 120k. I needed a rear differential pinion seal. Had it in shop to be fixed and they came back and said they were unable to find the right tool? So within one week my rear end is making a metal clanging sound??? I have parked and afraid to drive to ford. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? Gears? Pinion bearing? What do u guys think and can I nurse it to ford shop or tow u think. 6miles away. But I now I was leaking rear end fluid from pinion seal when I took in before this guy mangled and unable to fix. Almost like a vibrating clanging sound metal to metal kind of. Please email me or text me with info if u have had this happen. Ty! Bunk552003@yahoo.com or 330-774-8679. Joe

Sounds liike they didn't replace the crush sleeve, or set it properly. Take it to the dealer or a specialist. Should make it, but there may be more damage by this time. Towing is probably the way to go IMHO.

Yup. What he said. Sound like the mechanic screwed it all up.

And that crush seal is a one time only deal, you need someone knows what they are doing with a torque wrench, some say they can do it by feel, why risk it though?

Re: 2003 mach1 help!!

I got burned by a 'mechanic' who said he knew how to do the pinion seal and did not replace the crush sleeve. After having issues related to that 'fix', I sent it to a place that specializes in transmissions and rear ends and they told me the crush sleeve had obviously not been changed and that you have a special tool to measure resistance for setting the pinion bolt, not a torque wrench.

Re: 2003 mach1 help!!

It sounds like you might as well just have the whole rear end rebuilt. The labor involved is almost as much as a gear change. So you need an 8.8 rebuild kit with axle bearing and a ring and pinion of your ratio choice. At 120k just do it right and make sure you don’t have to pay out in the near future for anything else in the rear end...

I've built several rear ends for Ford 8" 8.8" and 9" rears and you do use a torque wrench to measure the resistance, just not your standard ft-lb wrench. It requires an in-lb wrench to get accurate measurements. For an 8.8 rear, it's about 10in-lbs for old bearings and about 20 in-lbs for new bearings.
