Lightbulb So, what's new with dual-beam HID conversions?

I see the "servo-tilt" systems and the "dual lamp" systems on evilBay. It's been about six months since the big HID thread had any comments posted.

Has anyone tried either of these two technologies?

Re: So, what's new with dual-beam HID conversions?

Well, OK then! If y'all are just gonna sit there like lumps, I'll tell you what's going on with them!

I just bought a set off evilBay; they havn't arrived yet. Maybe they'll arrive this week (and maybe monkeys will fly outta my butt).

I did not want to lose my high beams, and I did not want to use halogen lamps for the high beams and xenon HIDs for the low beams. Somehow that just doesn't compute.

So, I can get the lamps with separate high beam and low beam xenon lamps on the same base. The sounds OK at first glance, but the xenon lamps don't like to go on and off, especially in a hurry. So, that cuts out your flash-to-pass deal. Nope, can't go that way then.

So the set I went with has some kinda little solenoids on the lamp bases that move the lamps between the high and low positions inside the reflector housing. Do they move the lamps so violently that the lamps burn out right away? I have no freakin' idea. This guy has pretty decent feedback, he's in America, more or less speaks English according to his emails, and states a one-year warranty. So, for $185 shipped, it should be fun.

Yes, I bought a relay harness, too. If the lamps regularly use 35 watts, that's about 3 amps at 12 volts. If they can use triple that at start-up, that's move like 9 amps or 108 watts, like twice the standard halogen lamps. I have no wish to fry what is probably an astonishingly expensive headlight switch and maybe even the turn signal and high-low beam thingy, so the relay sounds like a good investment.

Stay tuned for more details. I do have a picture of the set that this guy sent me, but I don't have a place to host it.

Don

So, I got my lamp kit today!

The good news is that the lamps kit includes relays and fuses, so it anyone needs a relay harness with fuses and diodes already added, I've got one I'll let you have at a good deal.

All I've got to to is add the diodes, and I'm good to go (knock on wood). BTW, FordMan, thanks for the diode tip! I've been around doing 12 V wiring for a long time, and that's the first time I've heard that. I did a little test with a 12 V battery I have around, and there's significantly less arcing with the diode in the circuit! Cool!

BTW, these kits are from China, and I mean China. I've gotta let y'all in on the text on the back of the box:
Function elucidation:

The Xenon of the brand of Tenon adds the metals Silicon chemical element after annoy the light tube use the crystalBecome, the recognize various chemistry air to fill, 90% Xenon spirit and of 5% iodines to turn of the among them include of The sloth air through rise to press the machine, 12 volts direct current voltages in a twinklings of the go up the original carseseses. The flap to stir up the crystal light Xenon inside the tube to annoy the electrons to swim to leave through an electric voltage. Produces the arc light in two electrodes between.

The special safety design that product possess singly:

1.The short-circuit proof equip
2.Protect the measure without the load
3.Went against to press the protection design and raise to go the car safe function and environmental protections
That's it. I swear that's what it says, spelling, punctuation errors and everything. "Annoy?" "Sloth?"

Re: So, what's new with dual-beam HID conversions?

Update.

Well, they are bright, no two ways about that. I do not recommend firing one off while staring at it. There's probably no need to ask me how I know this.

So, first of all, the little white spot thingy that actually illuminates is about the same size as the filament on a halogen lamp. Problem is, it's not in the same location, axially. It's maybe 3/16 of an inch off, which will probably throw off the focus of the lamp. I did the old garage door test though, and the cut-off on low seems to be about the same as the halogen lamps. So, it might be all right.

There's a relay / logic box on these kits; it's the black box in the picture with a zillion wires running into it. Unfortunately, mine is bad, and it's not operating the solenoids on the lamps. So, I left the harness in and sent the seller an email like, "Hey, it's bad, send me another box, OK?" We'll see how this works out.

BTW, there's a great hollow passage just inside the bumper cover that's a great conduit to run wires from one headlight to the other.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled program .

Re: So, what's new with dual-beam HID conversions?

I've been reading a few posts on the HID kits for a Mach 1. I might have read over them too fast, but I couldn't find a brand name for a good kit. I have read mixed feelings on the Mecca kit, but there are others. What are their names? And as far as the foglights, does anyone have the Pauls High Performance ones on their car? I believe they're dual foglights.

Re: So, what's new with dual-beam HID conversions?

OK, so they're on and working! I had to re-jiggle the solenoid connections to one lamp today, but they are working.

So, a correction to my original post about the wrong axial length for low beams. The solenoids are activated on low beams, so the axial light source location should be about right. On high beam, then, the light source moves toward the front of the car, which provides some attempt at a high beam. I drove around a while yesterday evening with one on high and one on low (see "re-jiggle connections, above) and I did not get flashed by anybody. So I guess that's cool.

As received, however, the relay setup provided low beams and flash-to-pass, but not high beams continuously. I have figured out a cheap easy fix for this, and if you have this kind of kit and you're struggling with it right now, PM me and I'll tell you. Otherwise, I'm trying to hold up the guy who sold me the kit for two spare lamps in return for the information, seeing as how he sold me something that didn't really work right and I spent like 2 or three hours figuring out how to fix it. Trust me, it's a an easy fix, so don't rip it out and send it back yet.

More as it develops... now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
