EBC sport rotors

For Xmas I got the EBC 3D Sport rotors (gd7024 & gd7021). I store my car away for the winter and got my car out to install them last week on 5/3/2012.
4 days later I went to wash my car because it rained here the previous 3 days and the rotor hats have white spots all over them and the hats have also canged color from black to bronze. I called EBC Brakes and told them the problem and they asked me to send pictures, I did and called backed the next day and 2 people told me the same thing. The zinc coating to preserve the color is not guaranteed to last after a acidic rain or snowfall. It did rain here for 3 days in a row but I told them this is BS and this should not happen to a brand new rotor. He said again sorry it is not guaranteed not to happen. I then said if I should have the hats painted would this happen again. He said a lot of people have them powdercoated and i said now thats more money out of my pocket to have them black again. He also said that the white speckles were from the rain and it could be cleaned off and I told him that I tried washing it off and after drying it would come back. Stay away from these rotors. Bad experience for me. A picture of what I started with and after. Pics arent real good with my phone. Sorry.

Re: EBC sport rotors

After my stockers I bought Rotor pros Rotors and I always used Rainx carwash. Never a problem. I wash my car 2-3 days a week. I just wanted to upgrade my rotors to a better brand and what a waste of money this was with no customer satisfaction. I will not ever recommend these guys to anyone.

Re: EBC sport rotors

You can just use some high temperature paint on them. Those spots look like calcium deposits. Try wiping it with white vinegar, a lot of people use that to remove water spots on glass.

Re: EBC sport rotors

They say that these rotors will not rust with the zinc coating which they do. and the rotor hats are ruined and I have to have them powdercoated after 1 week of use.

Re: EBC sport rotors

That sucks. I wouldnt pay to have them powdercoated. I used flat black grill/stove paint on my rotors. Stays looking nice plus its cheap and high heat resistant. Just dont paint the flat part that actually contacts the wheel.

Re: EBC sport rotors

Couple things. First, check the website for what the warranty says. How are they supposed to know if you have acidic rain? They have a network of rain collection spots world wide? I bought ebay generic rotors over 2 years ago, fully coated, for my vette and though its been awhile since I've popped a wheel off I'd bet the hat is still coated and that's after driving through god awful salted PA roads this winter and last(wheel isn't very open faced so can't see by just looking in). That sounds like avoiding the warranty at its best. Try having a buddy call them up from a cell phone and ask what the warranty is. Put it on speaker phone and record it on somebody else's cell phone. I'd almost bet they'll say guaranteed not to rust or peel off.

Also, why do the slots and dimples run onto the hat area? Are other brand rotors like that? Looks like that was done strictly for looks, to have that one more dot and that slightly longer slot vs the competition. Looks like form over function if I've ever seen it. Sorta like their "kangaroo paw" rotors which have tiny randomly placed slots all over them.

Third, go to local car store and just buy spray on engine or caliper spray for less then 10 bucks. Tape off area and spray away. Doesn't even have to be a good job, as the pad will wipe away any over spray within first minute of use. Again though, only if you're forced to keep the rotors, which I'd raise hell unless the warranty specifically states in writing well... that there's not really a warranty. But if it says anywhere guaranteed for life of rotor or anything like that, no way would I keep them. Good luck.

So the rotopros were good rotors, but you switched because of brand name?

Re: EBC sport rotors

The rotorpros rotors rusted every time they got wet. They were inexpensive rotors and I was just looking to buy a better rotor that would not rust.

Re: EBC sport rotors

Most rotors are made of iron which means they will rust if they get wet and sit even overnight. There are now very expensive other options for rotor materials if you're willing to spend the cash. I just installed rotopros over the weekend. I searched for a long time and could not find a better price and from reviews the quality is fine for normal use.

Re: EBC sport rotors

I went with their ceramic pads. Though some complained about noise issues with them I have not had a single issue. They were pretty snug fit over the front rotors though. You have to make sure the calipers are all the way pushed in. The rotopros perform as well as OEM if not a bit better from the limited driving I've done so far. It looks like they will generate a fair amount of dust though which is OK by me. I have black wheels anyway which tends to hide dust somewhat.
