4,600 Oil Change

Good Morning all. We're going to drive the Mach out west next month, and I use Mobil1 5-20. I change it every three thousand miles. I was wondering since most of the driving will be highway, can it last from Atlanta to L.A and back again, without an oil change? I figure 4,600 miles on the oil, if I don't change it in-between. Never went over three thousand without changing the oil.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

Actually, the Mach 1 manual recommends a 5k oil change interval (and that's using Motorcraft Synthetic blend oil). You will be fine.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

I run 7500-10000 with Amsoil with no problems. Probalby only once a year (if that) if it needs it or not.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

With synthetic oil you can easily go over 3k. I currently have Castrol Syntec and don't bother until about 5k. I'm probably going to go to Amsoil next time around because I've been running it in our Fusion and my F-250 diesel and love the stuff.

That does seem extended, but it must work well if you use it, and cobramach1 is going 5,000 on Castrol Syntec. I guess the Oil Filters are capable of going the distance? I've seen Amsoil, but never seriously thought about using it. I guess out of site out of mind.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

Some people that have had their oil analyzed have said their synthetic oil was still in excellent shape after 10,000 miles. I drive my Mach less than 4,000 miles a year mostly, so I only change my oil each spring.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

You don't want to use a stock or normal aftermarket filter beyond the recommended oil change intervals. Amsoil makes their own filters for extended use with their oil. The oil for our Fusion is good for 15k and my truck 25k as are the filters, however, I'm thinking about installing a remote filter on my truck and doing the oil analyzation. One of the guys I know hasn't changed oil in over 3 years in his diesel. I've got over 12k miles on the oil in my truck since this spring when I switched to Amsoil and the amazing thing is the oil still looks like new when I pull the dipstick. The other thing I noticed is the mileage went up on both vehicles when I switched to Amsoil. I could also tell a seat of the pants difference on the Fusion. I was running Castrol Syntec in the Fusion previously. Amsoil costs more, but you can go longer between changes so it's a wash. I plan on switching the Mach over to Amsoil when the oil needs changing after winter hibernation next spring.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

Ok, that makes sense. A higher quality oil goes hand in hand with a high quality filter.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

I use Mobil1 5-20 and change it every 5000 even though it is synthetic and can go further I change ever 5K and do it my self. 4600 highways miles would be nothing. Just check it on the road and change when you get back. And use a quality filter. I use the Ford Motorcraft 820S.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

I use Amsoil 0w-30 and change my oil once a year. Probably 2000-3000 miles. On my daily driver I use the same oil and the Amsoil filter and go 20,000 miles between oil changes. Been doing it for years with zero problems. Every independent oil analysis I've done has come back saying I could have gone longer.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

You can do it with Amsoil full synthetic. In fact, you can leave it in for a year and it'll last 25,000 miles. I've been using it in all my cars since 02 and it is fantastic.

Re: 4,600 Oil Change

I change the oil in my 2005 Grand Prix every 6,000 - 7,000 miles and have no problems. Pretty much all my driving is highway driving. The car now has 183,000 miles on it with no problems.
