Which F350?
I'm been looking around for a F350 dually. I been reading around but can't find anything to help me decide which year F350 to get. Thought I would ask ya'll for help. I can't decide to get a good used one or just get a new one (which my wife wants me to get a new one). I been leaning to getting used to save money but don't know what year is best to get. General/main purpose of the truck is to tow my new trailer with my car to various tracks in and out of state and maybe some in and around town riding. My question is which year F350 is best to get? Or should I get a new truck?

Re: Which F350?
Any budget in mind? It might not be a bad idea to look at ones that around a year old with not a lot of miles. This way you get a newer truck and save some money.
The 2015's are also coming out now, you may be able to find a great deal on a leftover 2014 or even 2013. |

Re: Which F350?
I'd stay away from 6.0s and run away from 6.4s as far as a diesel is concerned. Other than that, unless you can find a killer 7.3 with low mileage, the 6.7 Scorpion is an amazing engine. Likewise I'd stay away from one that's been chipped or modded.

Re: Which F350?
Budget depends on the year if it's too close to the price of a new truck I'll just get new. 30,000 and up I'll just get a new one. Used preferably 25000 and below.

Re: Which F350?
Our 2 fleet 6.4's tend to digest valves and out 6.0's are pieces of junk. Both 6.0 f550's have had their engines replaced under warranty and they sound and run like poop. We skipped the scorpion and went to Ram with a Cummins.

Re: Which F350?
Is this all a by-product of when Ford went to manufacturing its OWN diesel engines??

Re: Which F350?
I do know that IH/Navistar has cheapened their engines. It used too be a DT466 was bulletproof . Our new computerized emission equipped IH 466 engines are as finicky as a Chrysler lean burn engine. I do agree though Ford got it right on the Scorpion engine. Ford should have built their own Diesels years ago
An old 7.3 in an older F series can be boosted and tuned and is pretty much bulletproof . If I have a 6 liter making 400 hp and a 7.3 liter making the same power guess which motor is working a lot harder, hotter ect ect. |

Re: Which F350?
The 6.7 Scorpion is Fords first in house diesel. the 6.4s got a bad rep early on whne they were starting brush fires in Texas. They're not supposed to do things like this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dKLKm5i2ic
That's not the only problem, just the most fun one to watch...

What's everybody's opinion about the 6.4 that came in the F450s?

Is there a difference between the 250&350 6.4 and the 450 with a 6.4?

Re: Which F350?
Whichever ford you get (I love the ford chassis) get plenty of warranty! A 250 is fine if its your car and trailor. Have had a 6.0, nothing but trouble till you put in arp head studs an cometic gaskets.
I bought a new Ram with a cummins 2 years ago and have not looked back.

Re: Which F350?
My dad had a 6.7 F350 4x4 that he used to pull a 5th wheel travel trailer all over the country, his trailer was huge and that truck had no issue pulling and even in the mountains it had plenty of power. Suspension stability was incredible, he did have to put some type of tire pressure equalizers in the rear, but I have really no idea what those are but he was proud of them.
As a comparison, the 6.7 replaced the 6.0 he had. That stupid thing was on its 3rd turbo, when the 2nd one went out it caused a great deal of damage. And, of course that one went out while he was towing his trailer. He later had the heads built, APR studs throughout and all new hot side and it started to show signs of problems again, which is why he picked up the 6.7. When his first turbo went out he was running a bully dog, the second was on 100% stock tune. The 6.7 pulling his trailer across the country netted him 12mpg. Not to bad, considering he was pulling half his home. After 60k miles in the 6.7, he sold his truck and trailer and picked up a pusher motorhome. He's now the class of the park. lol The thing to note, he never had a single problem in the 6.7. The 6.0 never made it to 60k miles...

Re: Which F350?
I've had them all, several 7.3s, an F550 6.0 Manning conversion, an 06 Ram 3500 cummins, and now an 11 F450 6.7.
My favorite out of all of them, hands down the 6.7. I've had 6k in the bed no problems and used it to tow a 48' two car enclosed trailer. Even with two cars you barely know the trailers back there. Normally when I buy a truck the first thing I do is straight pipe it, and the normal tuner intake etc. The 6.7 doesn't even need it. My 6.0 was also nothing but problems, and there is nothing worse than driving a truck you know you cant depend on. I personally just don't like the Dodge trucks, don't ask me why I just don't even though I never had an issue in 3 yrs with the motor.

Re: Which F350?
Just a couple other things about the new superdutys, I'm not sure if these are options or standard but mine has remote start. They have a new plug system that only has to warm up a few seconds to start. When you go to start them just turn the key and it will turn over when it's ready, there is barely no waiting on cold mornings and it starts every time.
They also have a great system in tow mode, mine has a factory engine brake of some sort which does help, it also has a toggle to manually shift up and down when towing (you wont need to).

Re: Which F350?
You could always put airbags on it for towing?

Would airbags help with towing on a lowered truck?

Re: Which F350?
I really don't know, I've never seen a Superduty dropped. Around here most are 4x4s and go the other way. I'd go talk to someone at a truck store.
I know on my 11 its the first Superduty I've owned that I couldn't get under with a creeper. They sit pretty low from the factory so I just put on a cheap Firestone kit to lift the back some and to use when heavy hauling. It still rides well with them inflated and they will lift the truck several inches when fully inflated.

Re: Which F350?
Came across another truck 2003 f350 with the 7.3 but it's a shortbed. How well will a shortbed truck pull a 32ft bumper pull trailer?

Re: Which F350?
Just a reminder to everyone I'm looking for a F350 or F450 dually to tow my new trailer with my car and equipment to tracks around Texas and some tracks out of state. Depends on work schedule may try to run NMRA or NMCA next year.

Re: Which F350?
I looked by where you are and couldn't find much used for under 25K within 30 miles. All had over 100K miles. Does it matter if it's a base or does it have to have some decent options? It also might not hurt to know how much your trailer weighs plus whatever you plan to tow included.
It might even be worth a shot to head down to a local Ford dealer and seeing if there's any big discounts to get a great deal on a new one. I know trucks can have massive discounts. You never know. |
