The choice doesn't work that way... Let us know how you want to use the car and we can then give our recomendations...

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

If you do a search, there are quite a few threads on 4:10 vs 4:30 gear selection/use.

I'm one of those but, I have since made that wish come true.

If you are going to keep the car NA(or a little spray) then go with the 4.30s. If boosting is in the future then 4.10s.

Mach1 4R70W ratios as follows

4.10 = 2661 rpm
4.30 = 2791 rpm
4.56 = 2960 rpm

top speed w/ 3.55s, 5th gear @ 6798 rpm = 236 mph
top speed w/ 3.73s, 5th gear @ 6780 rpm = 224 mph
top speed w/ 4.10s, 5th gear @ 6787 rpm = 204 mph
top speed w/ 4.30s, 5th gear @ 6769 rpm = 194 mph
top speed w/ 4.56s, 5th gear @ 6771 rpm = 183 mph

3.73 = 2733 rpm
4.10 = 3005 rpm

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

Thanks for the transmission ratio's Orange Whip! I've been looking all over the Registry for a thread containing that info.

EDIT: Just noticed you didn't list all the ratios for a 3650. Could you post those ratios for 1-4th gear in a 3650 if you have it? Thanks!

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

The "larger" the gear, the Better the torque multiplicaton to the rear tires will be.

Easy way to understand it (or better yet, how it works.)

With the stock 3:55.1 - the drive shaft will turn 3.55 Times to 1 rotation of the rear tire.

With 4.30's, the drive shaft will turn 4.30 times to 1 rotation of the rear tire.

More turns of the driveshaft in relation to the tire means more torque.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

So according to that chart above, there is not that much torque in the 5th gear right?

So does anyone know if the 5th gear ratio listed here is really hard to push, and that's why 5th kills the car? I figure it's like a bike sprocket, the smaller it is, the harder to push. I need interpretation.

It really depends on what you want to do with your mach. If your just going to run around town and drag ocasionaly i would say 4.10. But perhaps you are more into drag racing and want to express the full potential of a 1/4 mile than your 4.30's are ideal. That doesnt mean that you cant drive 4.30's around town. They do just fine in city driving as well as highway speeds. Enough that they stay below 3000 rpm at 80 mph. 4.30's work the best with the 4 valve and stock transmission gearing. Our engines breath at the higher rpm scale and pulls harder during that range. That is what makes the 4 valve so special. You might loose a little top end because of the taller gear, but it more than makes up for it out of the hole.

If this is your DD, then I would go with 4.10's. I have 4.10's, but probably would have went with 4.30's if I was gonna stay N/A. As a second car, 4.30's would be good.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

This question has big a really big hurdle I haven't quite jumped yet. My buddy around town has 4.30's and loves them at the track, but come to highway draggin I always hear him talkin about.....

"waiting for someone to slow down so he could get into 3rd gear"

I don't wanna have to wait for someone to slow down so I can get in a good gear to rape someone. I wanna be able to punch it and go.

You think 4.10's then??

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

If I were going to seriously drag race my Mach, and still wanted 4.10's for street use....I would get 4.30's and some street wheels and tires about 5% more diameter than stock effectively giving me 4.10's for street use (4.30's 5% lower than 4.10's), and then correct speedo for 4.10's. Then use stock diameter race tires giving me 4.30's at the strip.

But with our .62 5th, if you like to drag race, 4.30's are not a problem for street use like in the past when OD gears were more in the .67 (T 45) and .68 (3550 and T 5).

I have to give 2 thumbs up to the 4.10 gears. I just had them installed last week and what a difference. To me, my Mach feels lighter and undoubtedly quicker. My biggest concern was the gas mileage, but this is not a problem @ all. I drive 100 miles a day and can usually get 285 miles out of a tank. I’ve been getting 275 since this install, but I've also been much heavier on the pedal. IMHO the 4.10 are the best balance for a street car.

I almost always get 210 miles on a tank when the "Low Fuel" light comes on. My miles are about 99% city but I'm auto so that doesn't help matters either, but what ever the extra gas costs, this is one of the 3 mods that I wish I did the day I bought my Mach. The difference is VERY substantial! YAHOOOO! Now I wish I went with 4.30's. Hummmm, they can always be changed again plus, Christmas is just around the corner. The only thing is that I think the 4.10's would be better with a Procharger and that's on my short list too so I guess only time will tell as to just how good I've been this year. 4.30's or a Procharger? I don't see a down side either way. Life is good.
