Coolant Mod

Ok I have my heads out and I'm thinking of doing the coolant mod on the drivers side head. What does everyone think?

Re: Coolant Mod

Cooling mod costs alot less than an engine rebuild in the event those back cylinders get hot and detonate. I think its a no brainer if your boosted and the car see's full throttle and/or high speeds, or you have an aggressive tune or setup thats more prone to detonation.

I think its a safe bet to have even if your NA and drive the car hard. I put it on mine.

Re: Coolant Mod

Never hurts to do it IMO.

I've heard mixed reviews on the usefulness of it but I think it would be good.

Re: Coolant Mod

My car has no mods on it at all, completely stock. I just picked it up last fall so I don't know how hard it has been driven. That being said my valve still burned, you can follow my other posts on it. With the mixed reviews I'm just not sure if it will really fix anything.

Re: Coolant Mod

It will definitely improve coolant flow through the heads, in my opinion there is no question about that. There would be no better time to do it.

Re: Coolant Mod

I know it's merits are debateable but, I'm wondering if directing more flow to the 2 left rear cyls will starve others or create other issues?
Can't seem to find any mention of this so, any feedback would be appreciated.

when you put the fitting on the back of the head you T into the output of the passenger side head before it goes to the heater core if I remember correctly, there are no ill effects that Ive ever heard of.

OP - the old LDC cooling mod was acquired by Dagistino Racing or however you spell it, do NOT purchase from them! Youll be lucky to ever see your order, it looks like they may have actually gone under but their site is still up taking orders and processing cards.

Cobra engineering has a setup now but you have to buy AN fittings and lines, sounds like its $. As mentioned you might want to look into the Lethal Performance Gen 2 mod that uses a plug on top of the motor at the rear instead but I cant remember how it ties in upfront.

Re: Coolant Mod

Get a new issue of "Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords" they have a complete article with pictures on how to install the Cylinder Head Mod plus why you should do it, about 4 pages worth. The one they installed is "The Cobra Head cooling Mod, but they list 3 others and where to purchase them. They say you can't go wrong with any of them and they highly recommend it.

Re: Coolant Mod

Thanks Guys- I was leaning toward doing it though I don't want to create a problem somewhere else. I've had "issues" with #7 and especially #8 cylinders (a long sad, ongoing story) I'd like to see what kind of testing MM&FF did. Thanks for the input.

They talked about NO# 7 & 8 having problems because of not getting coolant to those back 2 cylinders.

I read it complete, doesn't really seem to hard, especially without an Eaton sitting on top !!

Yup, and WAY better than removing the trans to get to the back of the head. This kit is within my "want to" level.

Re: Coolant Mod

I am slightly confused on this mod and would like to do it because I drive my car at the track. What I am confused about is the installation process, is there a mod that that does not require me to drop the trans or engine? and what does it look like installed?

Thanks.

the one sold by lethal performance does not require dropping the transmission to install. If you look at where the stock coolant crossover installs at the front of the motor, there are 2 ports in the same place at the back of the motor. You knock out one of the freeze plugs and put their fitting in then run a hose up from there up toward the coolant crossover or radiator hose...I really cant remember where it hooks in up front though

Yes. Thats the gen2 version. Essentially you are just putting a T after the crossover and connecting it to drivers side freeze plug. You are sending coolant from the back of the drivers side head directly to the radiator. My guess is doing so allows less coolant from the drivers side head to go to the crossover, leaving more room for coolant to flow through the passenger side head.

Re: Coolant Mod

^^^ the issue is in the stock setup coolant cant exit the rear of the driver side head so it has to do a big loop through the head instead of just a single pass. Adding either style coolant mod lets coolant flow out of the back of the head

Why not run exits from the passenger and the drivers side to the crossover? Instead of just the one.

the pass side head has an exit at the rear that goes to the heater core
