bad trans whine?

After having put the new motor in. (cars been down since may) I noticed i have afew problems with the trans.

1. theres about 1 1/2 inch of free play in the clutch pedal
2. think my cable my be stretched because on the clutch fork, i can pop the cable off and on with ease.
3. when i start the car up. it rattles loud and then quiets down right after and a whining noise takes its place, but when my foot is on the clutch it goes away, thent ake my foot off the clutch and the whine comes back.

I know the Tremecs are loud transmissions, but this is super loud. I changed the fluid with motorcraft fluid and it still does it. Car has a cobra clutch, stock flywheel, firewall adjuster and clutch quadrant, stock cable, FRPP TOB. all the clutch parts have less than 10,000 miles.

any ideas? I have a video, but youtube says it will take 70 mins

Re: bad trans whine?

Does it get louder when you drive it in each gear? Mine did this in my cobra and it ended up being the input shaft bearing. Same issue as you, when the clutch engaged the whine started. One way to tell is if it does it in 4th gear or not. My tranny did it in every gear but 4th because 4th is 1 to 1 ratio. So if yours is quiet in 4th thats probably what it is. Oh this was in my 99 cobra it has a mach 3650 transmission.

When you pull the tranny if you do, try to move the input shaft side to side. If it moves any at all visibly then thats your problem. Here is a video of how my car sounded when driving it.

Re: bad trans whine?

yea i was sittin in the KFC drive-thur and it hit me....the pilot bearing might be messes up. because its a brand spankin new bearing but there were afew problems putting the trans in. and i think the input shaft might have messed it up. It does it in 1st-3rd gears, not sure about 4th though. ill check in afew.

But i think its one of the bearings. I was just scared it was something internal, like fluid was very low or something. i can deal with the driving whine, but when i start it up it sounds so nasty. like nuts in bolts in the block..

Re: bad trans whine?

if it is the input shaft bearing or the pilot bearing, is it still ok to drive/ beat on? Im breaking my new motor in to get tuned saturday and would like to just get the motor tuned and then change the bearings out.

Re: bad trans whine?

well if it sounds like nuts and bolts when you start it, then thats not the input shaft bearing. Did you watch my video? I ran my car pretty hard for 3000 miles and had no issues with it other than the whining i just took it out to put another one in it.

Re: bad trans whine?

yep thats the input shaft bearing, when you pull the trans I bet it will have a bunch of side to side play in it.

Re: bad trans whine?

I didn't do it I just got another tranny. That one is sitting in the garage ready to work on, I don't think its extremely hard but you have to take the reverse gear off to be able to pull the input shaft off I believe. I will probably just pay someone to do it.
