Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
Okay here's a Q from me.
When I start typing in a password (like to logon to the Registry), how do I get the cpu to give me the little 'hint' box that allows me to click on it to complete the login rather than typing the whole thing out?? I use this feature a lot to finish typing in my email address since it's not a short one on other sites as well. This feature used to work before the hard drive crashed six months ago. (Windows XP Home)

That's why I turn AutoComplete off in login forms on my sites...I don't want the liability so I disable it.

Windows XP Operating system. DELL 8400 Desk top Pentium 4
In NeverWinter Nights 2 my son can't talk to the characters after installing a new video card. Looks great, everything else seems to work fine. Any suggestions? He's about to uninstall and start over. |

We have a problem, we can not click on "links" posted in a post. When I click on a link the frame freezes for about 20-30 seconds then just acts like nothing is wrong but never takes you to the link you just clicked. Any ideas?

What operating system, web browser and version are you using? What happens when you right-click, copy link, paste it on your desktop and then click on it?

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
Okay I have another question, what is the difference in the version of vista ultimate you buy at bestbuy:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1158317974609 And at newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116213 I know that the newegg.com says its for system builders but is there actually any difference in the software or support. Or is the difference just the packaging?

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
OEM, builder's package, or white box sales are generally sold without documentation. Usually there is a requirement that you buy a piece of hardware in the same purchase when you see these deals on Windows, but I didn't see that requirement on this.
Really the only difference is the box (or actually lack of one). |

Re: Official Computer Questions Thread
OK computer Gods, this morning out of the blue my Toshiba notebook gave me a low battery warning (normal) and I connected my AC adapter like always. The screen got a little brighter and the icon on tray indicated the battery was charging (normal). The bad part is the light that is normally amber and turns blue when the battery is fully charged never came on and the screen changed back to its normal brightness level for battery power. I disconnected the power and reconnected, this time no change at all except for a faint humming.
I just lost an AC adapter on my wife's notebook and the replacement took care of the problem. I picked up a replacement this afternoon and no change. I had the technician check the replacement at the shop before I left so now I have two good AC adapters and a dang computer issue. I went to the Toshiba site and followed their troubleshooting to no avail. Now that the battery died and it did a hibernate I have the following indications. With the battery removed and the adapter connected nothing happens, it should power up. With the battery installed and adapter connected when the power switch is pressed the battery light flashes amber 12 times. It does this every dang time. It does the same with only the battery too. WTH, is there some dang secret reset for this thing. I don't want to take it to the shop for some BS reset or pee on a spark plug crap. HELP

and I was right ha! Theres nothing magical at all. What you have is a power cord connection issue. The odd thing is, this is the most common and one of the most expensive repairs (besides the LCD). Plugging in, unplugging, moving the laptop around while plugged in, etc. will all cause strain on the connection. Heres a couple tests: Plug the adapter into the computer. Does the connection wiggle? If yes, plug the other end into the wall. Now, push in on the connection on the laptop, push it to the top, bottom, left and right and see if you cant get it to make a connection, even if just for a blip of the charging light. Assuming this is the problem, this means a laptop motherboard replacement.

I love this computer. It has been perfect until now. Would I be better off to buy a new one if it needs a motherboard? I got this thing using my son's Wal-Mart discount with a bonus coupon for an extra 15%, so it was kinda cheap. I guess if it comes to that I could get one that would allow me to make use of my accessories, memory, hard drive etc... The funny thing is my son just got back on with WM in a management position, I can use his discount again. Thank God for frequent backups. :HOPPY:

Best thing to do is wait til Best Buy has a Centrino DUO with 1gb of ram on instant rebate for like $599-$699. They usually have one every 4 weeks or so. They are usually sold at like $200 below cost. Also, you can always just ebay your computer model number and grab a motherboard off there for $20 and change it yourself.

You can also wipe off Vista and put XP on it if you're more comfortable that way.
