They were probably corrosion relays! Nothing in nature rusts that fast without some kind of help...

Re: Trivia for today

For today; One of the options on the original 289 Cobras was a 1/4 mile oriented prep package. What was the name given to those unque and rare Cobras?

Re: Trivia for today

Right on the money, Dave...

For today, Shelby Cobras had a serial number prefix either CSX, COX, or COB followed by a four digit number. What did each of those prefixs stand for?

CSX, Carroll Shelby eXperimental(export) (left drive) Sold by Shelby
COB, Cobra cars sold in England by AC right drive
COX, Cobra cars sold in the US and Britain, Left drive

I think it gets confusing, but the one you want is a CSX3000 built in 65-67...

I think.........maybe........

Re: Trivia for today

Sounds pretty close to me. The way I was told it was; CSX-Carroll Shelby Export (exported to the USA), COX-Cobras exported to Europe, and COB-Cobras sold in Britain. I don't believe there was a CSX3000, as the final three digits of the serial number were to indicate the production number. The exception is CSX2000, the first Cobra. Both CSX 3001 and 3002 were considered 427 prototypes, and actual 'production' competition Cobras started with 3003, and continued to 3100...but the one I want is 2286, 2287, 2299, 2300, 2601 or 2602...otherwise known as Daytona Coupes...

Re: Trivia for today

I was referring to the CSX3000 series of cars, they had the 427/428 engines, I think.

I have had a few rides in an Original 65 427 side oiler. I do not think I have ever been in anything, driven on the street, that accelerated like those cars........Very impressive.

Re: Trivia for today

In a letter from a very knowledgeable individual, the Cobra engine situation plays out thusly...The 3000 series cars were all 427's, but the earliest numbers were 'regular' 427's. The rest were side oilers. The 3100 series cars were 427's. Almost every 3200 series car had 428's, as did early 3300 cars. The rest of the 3300 cars were side oiler 427's with a single 4V, rather than the dual quads.
Yes, a ride in a Cobra is permanently embedded in the brain, a 289 as much as a 427...but the 427 is just brute force. A ride in a Viper in about as close as anything you'll find in current produciton that comes close...but even it feels...less primordeal...
(Still want a Daytona Coupe...)

As my 6000th post, thanks to all who've paticipated here. It's getting harder and harder to find Trivia that keeps this thing at the top of the post count.

For today, Tom Greatoreaux made the claim that when the Cobra Daytona finished its record run at the Salt Flats, Shelby offered to sell him the sad looking car. Tom turned it down. How much was it (reportedly) offered to him for? And how much did the Cobra racing team cars (Daytona, 427 roadster, and King Cobra) get put on the market for once the season was over? (There is a widely published letter from Lew Spencer with this information, so it is not speculation or urban legend) Bonus, what kind of money does a Daytona bring these days?

Re: Trivia for today

For those watching, I know this was a bit more detailed than usual, but the numerbs are:
1) Cooper Monaco (known as a King Cobra) for $3,000
2) 289 Cobra USRRC champ., $6,000
3) 427 Cobra race car (Ken Miles car), $8,500
4) 427 Cobra Nassau car, $6,000
5) GT-350 race car, $5,200
6) Cobra Daytona Coupe $8,700

And finally; Shelby's car went for $4.4mil. at auction, sold to Jim Spiro of New Orleans who later sold it for a reported $6 mil. The 'lost Daytona', an unrestored car that was stored for over 20 years went to its new owner for $3.7+mil.

For today; Ford was in such a tizzy to win LeMans in the mid-60's that it attempted to buy Ferrari. In an interview last Jan. Shleby told of the real reason that the deal fell through to buy Ferrari for roughly $20 mil., what was that reason? (No it wasn't the bean counter issue, or Ferrari's desire to run the Ford racing program.)

Re: Trivia for today

Shelby told in teh interview that Ferrari had wanted to go to and win Indy, something that Ford had little interest in at the time but a situation that would change shortly afterwards.

For today; Back to the Dragonsnakes: How many were built and what was very different about the last Dragonsnake built?

Of the 6 Dragonsnakes built, the last one was the only 427 powered car, also only one was equipped with a radio...

Re: Trivia for today

'74 was right. Even the sircraft carrier size '71-'73 Mach 1's still made you pay extra for the tach...as did the '69/'70 cars..

Re: Trivia for today

...and it was the ONLY year that size motor was in a Mach 1!

Can you name the only other one year motor for the Mach 1?
Can you name the one year motors for the '64 1/2-'73 Mustang line up (I'm not counting one offs like the 427 Super Snake)...

Re: Trivia for today

You may be thinking of the 255 V-8, but it was not a one year engine. It was used from '80-'82, including the '82 GT package.

Even though it's not unique in displacement, it is unique to the '71 model year...so I give it a yes. There are still others in the Mustang line up, as well as the othe rone year Mach 1 engine...
