Here is another new writeup on this subject that is probably as complete as any I've ever seen.

At my power level, it makes more sense. I used a GT auto brake pedal, with Mach 1 IUP cover.

Re: How to change your 5 speed to an automatic
I understand the reasoning completely, But...easier....why would you want to make it easier? It's like taking the skill out of the equation......yes I understand that in VERY high horsepower cars it is the way to go, but the question stands....Why in the HELL would you change your 5 speed to an automatic rather than just buy an auto to begin with, as well as why did you buy a cobra if you don't want a stick? It may just be me and a few others....but this is the dumbest thing I've heard of in a long time.

My car made 710 rwhp and spun on the dyno at 3000 RPM in 4th gear with the 6-speed. When I took the car out to race, I went through clutches and rearend parts quite frequently. The 6-speed was too hard on parts, and reliability suffered. To get the most reliability, enjoyment, and streetability out of the car at the strip and on the street, a 4R70W auto was the way to go at that power level. It may be the dumbest thing you ever heard of, I can accept that. I am sure you have your own way of dealing with your high HP monster...Mr. 4.10s and exhaust.

Call Darrin at BC-automotive.com. He did an article in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords on converting my Bullitt from a 5sp to a 4R70W about a year ago. Lopped off almost .7 from my ET with that conversion. Since then I've installed a 4V and with the shifter in "Drive" and with the EEC completely controlling the shifting and lockup, the car is now running 9s with just under 700RWHP. The original poster used a Lentech tranny with an Open converter. You can go with a lock-up converter with Darrin's conversion which makes the car MUCH more streetable and has a huge advantage at the track too on the big end. Mine's trapping 139mph currently. Open converters soak-up HP. I started a thread with my recent escapades with the 4V with some additional details on the car here... http://www.mach1registry.org/forums/...ad.php?t=83994

Re: How to change your 5 speed to an automatic
Figure I might as well ask.
Can I expect the same type of performance if I used a stock Mach 1 with an automatic trans as I would a stock 5 spd Mach 1 converted to an automatic? |

Re: How to change your 5 speed to an automatic
IF you put a stock tranny and converter in the 5 spd, then probably yes. BUT almost no one that is doing the conversion would use stock stuff. So the performance would be better, just like if you took the stock auto mach and upgraded it.

Why are you asking? Are you thinking of buying a Mach, have a choice between an auto and a manual? If that's the case and you want to end up with an automatic, I'd certainly get the automatic to begin with and start the mods from there.

My only worry from this point on with an Automatic is researching to see if I need to get different mod parts than a manual. Not very car educated I'm afraid. |

Re: How to change your 5 speed to an automatic
If you want to end up with an Automatic and have a choice, start with one. The remainder of the car is the same with the exception of the material in the crank shaft as I mentioned earlier.

Re: How to change your 5 speed to an automatic
Ah, apologies for the delayed post.
Looking back at the choice of Mach 1 Auto or Manual, the automatics come in 4 speed while the manual is a 5 speed. Is this important at all for any performance related to the car? Loss of torque, etc. Sorry for being a pain, just trying to do my homework before buying a car (this time around being the Mach 1 of course). |

Re: How to change your 5 speed to an automatic
Can a PCM from a 5 speed Mach be reflashed to an auto PCM? I know the Cobra guys have to swap because the Cobra PCM is pinned differently and Ford left the auto trans stuff out but aren't all the Mach PCM's pinned the same? I am really thinking of going to an auto and do not want to go MVB.
