And if Mark Sanchez and Joe Flacco can make it to the AFC Championship game... any argument about Alex Smith is invalid. He's thrown 5 interceptions all season. If the Lions defense could catch, Brees would have done that in one game.

Oh and since you're obviously a band wagon fan like 99% of Saints fans, you'd remember when they were in the same division and the Niners owned you for decades. Alex Smith played in a system last year where Mike Simpletary wouldn't allow him to call audibles. I prefer to judge him by his present year. I mean, you do want to talk about the present, right? Cause with a coach that knows how to teach the position? He's been a good quarterback. Not, elite, but he doesn't have to be because the rest of the team is complete.

He has been clutch this year leading 4th quarter drives to win games 5 times, 4 on the road. Joe Montana didn't have gaudy passing numbers either, but he was clutch and that's all that mattered. I'm not saying Alex is Montana by any means, but people judge players by fantasy stats these days and not with their eyes. He makes plays when he needs to and he doesn't lose the game. That's all the Niners need out of him.

My all time favorite QB Jim McMahon made it to the NFC Championship game his first time out, Super Bowl the second.

You're so correct sir...born and raised and that made me band wagon....I'm only 24 btw so the paper bag years are a history I have no memory off. I was there during the Aaron Brooks years in the dome chanting to put Jake Delhomme in bc he was so garbage.

But yes. All Alex Smith does is manages a game. Like Trent Dilfer, he will only get to a Super Bowl bc of the real players around his team. At least this we can agree on.
It's not hard to hand a ball off 30 times a game and run a total of 50 plays is it? Harbaugh taught him very well...this is all I have to work with so let's give him the easiest reads possible and the safest plays bc I can't trust he can win a game but we've seen for 6 years he can lose it.

I'd rather stick with #9 who has the ability to win the game for us... if for some reason our defense actually shows up this time...and stops Gore for maybe 65-70 yards. It's gonna be bad. Akers better get his shoes tied like in the Eagles days bc he'll be kicking a lot of 40+ yarders in that game.
Seattle last year meant nothing to the offense...if you score 33, you should win right? Unless your D gives up 40...but who knows. Maybe an '09 caliber D will show up this week...or a first half Lions game version. Have to wait till Sat to find out what the hell Greg Williams is thinking

Long before we hated the Falcons, we grew up in La. hating the '9ers for just that reason. It was a given we'd lose to them. Of course back then we lost to pretty much anyone. I DO remember the paper bags. Heck I went to a game before there was a dome, and the team (if that's what you wanted to call them) played in Tulane stadium. In the 90s the games were little more than a reason to party. The noise of the crowd talking among themselves was so bad you couldn't follow the game (if you really wanted to). No bandwagon fan, me.

If the unthinkable happens Sat night, I'll drive up to console you with a couple beers.

Remind me again what happened the last time they met in the Playoffs? I keep forgetting.

Re: NFL Football Thread

Wow. Tebow balled out. Stings a little on the face to lose that game.

Steelers looked flat all game and Harrison couldn't stop the option. You always hit the qb in the option, even if he doesn't have the ball. It wears him out after a while...

Serviceman, better hope Tom puts up 40 cause that horrible D you have can't stop anyone.

Robby, I'll keep talking and you keep predicting Dem Saints commin' haha

In half as many starts, Dilfer threw twice as many interceptions with a 76 passer rating. Also a 6.6 yard average. Smith has a 7.1 average, Brees has an 8.3 average. Alex came back to win behind by 20 in Philly and threw for 200 yards in the 3rd quarter. He came back to win in Detroit with a clutch 4th down TD pass. He came back to win in Seattle with a 40 yard pass to Crabtree. And a 50 yard pass to Vernon Davis in Cincinnati. The Dilfer comparison is NOT EVEN CLOSE. The defense of the 2000 Ravens would hold teams to less than 10 points and they'd still lose games. The only game they didn't score more than 19 this year was against Baltimore. The offense is way better than the 2000 Ravens. That team scored an average of 16 points/game

The last time you played at the stick... the leading passer of the game was Alex Smith, the leading rusher was Frank Gore and the leading receiver was Vernon Davis. Had it not been for a botched snap from David Baas (who is now with the Giants) that led to a safety, that game was the Niners to win. Do you remember the 80 yard drive Alex had against you and the two point conversion to Vernon Davis on Monday night? Cause Trent Dilfer never did anything like that.

In case you forgot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obHhsNhvW0g

I know Brees came back and set up a FG to win, but Alex did his part and the comparison to Trent Dilfer is an absolute insult. The guy has been clutch all year when they needed him to be.

I agree with 3/4, but I pick the Niners. That's my homer pick and my statistical projected pick.

As good as the Niners defense is, they play a lot better at home. Take out the Cowboys game where 3/4 of the secondary was inactive (not too mention being robbed of a fumble the forced in the red zone) and they allowed an average of 8.5 points/game at home.

I know it's hard to fathom, but I don't see the Saints scoring more than 24 points. I expect them to score early though. The Niners for whatever reason play vanilla on the first drive and make adjustments soon there after. It makes me nervous every week.

Dilfer was so bad that I don't see how he became an analyst. He's the Tim McCarver of the NFL...just a bunch of senseless babble.

Ultimate scenario for me is:

Broncos, Texans, Giants Niners win

Then the Broncos and Niners play the superbowl

Just so we can piss off Elway one more time.

lol I might not agree with the 1st three lines of your post but I'm with you 100% on the Elway thing.

If Frisco had an O it might be a blow out. Surprised to see it this close considering the turn overs. Just saw teams with plus 4 turn over are 71-1 let's see if saints can make it 2
