04 mach tick, but different then head tick? Maybe?
Hey guys, my 04 mach has a very slight tick noise on driver side ( i searched and read though everything head tick related). It almost sounds like a leaky exhaust, only does it at idle, its maybe only louder then injectors but i hear it when im parked next to something or idling at the bank. car has 26k on it, and its a late model production car, 03 of 2004, shouldnt this have the revised head? I know most guys here said its louder with RPMs, mine goes away over 1100 or so, but at idle its annoying. Do i have the old tick? or could this be something stupid, like a pcv valve or a tiny manifold leak?
Second Note: I looked at the car and there is a sticker on driver side head that has a date of 08/17/2004?! I assume this head has been serviced or replaced? Thanks and sorry for another annoying tick post |

I hear a slight tick on mine at idle when its hot and I've been putting it to her a bit, never hear it when its cold.I think these aluminum engines transmit a bit more noise than steel is my guess.

I have noticed a slight tick at idle after some spirited driving as well, cant hear it otherwise.

I thought I had a tick but it turned out to be a grape-sized chunk of the honeycomb cat material that had broken off and would rattle around at idle. Try tapping the exhaust with a rubber mallet with the engine off and see if you hear it.

Re: 04 mach tick, but different then head tick? Maybe?
My 04 Mach has the exact same problem. I took it to the Ford dealer for diagnosis, and they diagnosed it as lifter noise. The mechanic said that I should just drive with it, that it doesn't hurt anything. The car only ticks at idle but goes away as RPM's increase. If it gets worse I guess I'll have to have the head rebuilt. My car has 20k miles on it. I'm going to try a different brand of oil at my next oil change in hopes that the lifter will quiet down. Currently running Mobile 1 Full synthetic 5w20, which can cause valve train noise according to some research I've done due to the thinness of the oil. Have you resolved your head tick problem? Let me know what conclusion you or your mechanic comes up with.

Thanks for the heads up as I have been thinking about going up as well since its only noticable when the engine is hot and I guess the oil breaks down a little.

mine did it at idle when engine got warm - changed oil to several different weights - did not fix - swapped out engine - fixed it!

Re: 04 mach tick, but different then head tick? Maybe?
My 1st 04 ticked after coming up to temp. My 2nd 04 I got used 3500 miles now has 65000 mile has ticked the whole time after coming up temp hasn't got louder It's a clearance issue after things get up to operating temp.

Re: 04 mach tick, but different then head tick? Maybe?
Is the tic through the entire RPM range? Hopefully the mechanic at Ford just uses lifter and lash adjuster interchangeably. Either way, my car has the exact symptoms that the OP is experiencing. I'm just going to keep driving the car since it only has 20k and try a different viscosity next oil change, maybe 5w-30.
