Re: 5 Speed Trans Fluid Change

well did the GBox oil change we use Pernrite synthetic ATF blend due to unavailability of mobil 1. It has a dexron and mercon rating and says for mustangs. we also used the lucas trans fix and the gear box now sounds noisier! Dont know what to do.

Further to this I called FORD in NZ they said to put in 3.1 Litres, so we put in about 100-200 more mills, seems to be shifting a bit better and a bit quieter, perhaps just need to give it some time to bed in. Am still going to look for some Mobil 1.

When i used Royal Purple in mine, it shifted better, no noise added on and felt alittle better. don't know what to tell you. i didn't use ATF in mine either

Ill keep an eye open for some of this when I go hunting for the "good oil", the process is quite easy as per this sticky, esp when you have a mechanic mate with a hoist and a pump

At what mileage should you change fluid? Im over 30K and recently my shifts have not felt as smooth, should I change fluid?

For many Ford cars I've seen factory maintenance schedules that says every 30k miles.

Best things to do to help with shifts:

1. Short throw shifter - MGW is amazing
2. Firewall adjuster and quadrant
3. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF with Lucas Trans Fix (total fill amount is 3.0L)

Give me some fluid options please? Anyone have the part number for the Lucas and if it's REALLY good to add. Thanks! Great write up.

Re: 5 Speed Trans Fluid Change

You need a really small drill. If you have a small drill it will make your life easier.

If you don't have a drill that can drill at least 2 holes behind the driverside valve cover, I wouldn't even attempt the install.

If your a small guy with smaller hands it will be much easier.

Overall it's pretty easy. Follow the Instructions.
