Check out this buff job on a B-17 Bomber!

How cool would it be to polish up a B-17 Bomber? I personally would pay for the honor!

Re: Check out this buff job on a B-17 Bomber!

That was an amazing job. That B-17 should pick up a few more knots at cruise and have less fuel burn too. Back in the 50's and 60's when our Air Force fighter aircraft were bare aluminum, they would polish up some of them with car wax for fighter meets like "William Tell" and they could pick up 30 or 40 knots on their top speeds. By the days of Vietnam they were all camouflaged and that paint added weight and drag.

As a WWII buff & detailing fanatic, I can honestly say I'd have volunteered my services for free to be a part of that project.

Re: Check out this buff job on a B-17 Bomber!

I made a scale model of that plane out of kitset back when I was 8 or 9 years old, hung it from my bedroom ceiling, same colours, great to see a real one, amazing what a huge amount of polish and elbow grease can do. Good post.
