Engine Build Check List
So I just got a list if goodies from the machine shop and wanted to make sure we were missing anything or have any foreseeable issues before I give them the green light.

Re: Engine Build Check List
If you’re gonna spin it high or make big power make sure it gets billet oil pump gears.
I’d also upgrade the timing dowel Why the over bore? If the block isn’t messed up I’d leave as much meat in the walls as possible I’d probably put all new timing components in it and if you’re thinking about cams now would be the time to do springs and cams

Re: Engine Build Check List
We will throw an Eaton on top with about 10-12lbs of boost running E85. Cams will push us over my budget, the machine work and bottom end was even a bit more than expected. Stuff gets expensive quick.
What do you suggest for the timing dowels, I'm no engine excerpt at all.

Re: Engine Build Check List
I agree on not going .020 over unless you need to. Billet oil pump gears are great and nows the time. Also, how do they intend to magnaflux an aluminum block?

Re: Engine Build Check List
I'm sure they will use penetrating dyes to accomplish the same thing sense you can't actually magnaflux aluminum

Re: Engine Build Check List
That's cool, I've never heard of that before. But then again, I build semiconductors for a living, not ic engines.

The Melling pump should have billet gears. I had a Melling pump in my old set up and it had billet gears.

Re: Engine Build Check List
Double checked with the machine shop, the Melling does have billet gears. Only mistake they made was on the pistons. Had some dished pistons ending up with 9.25 compression. Told him to figure some flat tops and we will be right at 10.8 with a .20 over bore. IF they have to bore it.

Re: Engine Build Check List
i thought the melling pump might but I wasnt 100%.
The timing dowel is basically a pivot point for the guide. The part that threads into the block is much smaller than the pivot point the guide sits on. When they fail its usually the block side so they drill and tap a bigger hole in the block to use a dowel with a larger diameter threaded side. At the proposed power level it sounds like youd be fine but again to do it later would be a real *****. If it does fail its probably taking the whole motor with it. If they have to do more than hone it I would still suggest the absolute minimum bore increase to clean it up. Make sure they do the machine work first and THEN order pistons. It doesnt sound like you'll be pushing that hard now but why create problems later when big power would only be a blower swap away.

Re: Engine Build Check List
I feel the pain on the expense but well worth doing everything the 1st time. I di mine 2 years ago, and dumped around $9000.00 all in. How about the heads will they get ported. If you are doing boost it is money well spent.

Re: Engine Build Check List
unless its a max effort build Im gonna go ahead and disagree. Im not a max effort build (not going class or grudge racing or anything) and NA SVT, my tuner and my builder all said not to bother porting the heads for my procharger setup. I make over 700 on E85 pretty easily, theres a decent amount still on the table to turn up my D1 further.

E85 for fuel? If you're getting studs, ensure those for the heads and the rod bolts are 2000s rather then the 8740s.
