Help with cooling issues

Here is a little back ground. A few weeks ago on a really hot day in south La, all of my coolant spewed out of the expansion tank after about 5 minutes of driving. I bought a new OEM expansion tank cap and 180* thermostat, which I drilled with 2 1/8" holes. I changed to fan settings to 180 low and 186 high. While I was down there I hooked up my autometer short sweep electric coolant temp gauge using the block drain plug on the drivers side. After burping the coolant I took it out for a 3 or 4 mile drive, came back and made sure it was still topped off and it was. By the way it only took in about 3 gallons (2 1/2 gallons of water and 3/4 gallon on coolant) and its a 4.8 gallon system. That night I took it out and was regularly seeing temps of 195 driving in the city and 180 on the highway.

All of this was with the a/c off. When I got off the interstate with the a/c on, sitting at a red light the temp crept up to about 215 until I shut the a/c off. Outside temp was probably around 75-80. The next day the coolant temps jumped up to almost 230 with the a/c on in low 90's outside temp.

I dont understand why I'm not seeing the cooler temps that other people running similar cooling mods are seeing. I checked the a/c condenser and its clear. The fans come on when the a/c is turned on, but didnt come on at 180 until I turned the a/c on and back off. I turned the car off, cranked it back up and they came on. I thought this may be because the factory sending unit wasnt seeing 180 yet but I'm not sure.

Anybody have any ideas whats going wrong here? I'm running a Procharger P1SC with 3 core air-air intercooler and head cooling mod. Thanks in advance.

Re: Help with cooling issues

Thats what I thought but I let it idle until the thermostat opened twice. Drove it 4 miles, checked the crossover and it was full. Ran it hard for 30 miles and the crossover was full. If there was a bubble it would be getting hot all the time, not just when the a/c is on. Thats what happened to me before anyway. I figured it didnt drain completely or something in the cooling system was clogged, but if that was the case then the coolant wouldnt be circulating and keeping it cool.

Did you just finish with the blower install? I always suggest a larger radiator because of higher load, but mostly because of reduced air flow available.
Do you still have the "air flow directors" on each side of the opening for the radaitor AND the director on the bottom.........VERY important!

Call me if you need help after burping her again.
I jacked up the front end and checked the coolant crossover and it its still full. The blower has been on there for about 3 years. When just the blower was on there, I had no problems running the a/c. It started doing this after I had the motor built last fall but I never ran the a/c much because I like to have my windows down and it was cool outside. I was thinking I may need to upgrade the radiator but I see guys all over here and svtperformance saying their temps never get much past 190-195 with the similar mods so something is just not right with my car. I think the a/c needs a recharge but I dont see that being the heat issue.

Re: Help with cooling issues

I am going threw a similar problem with my procharged mach. How in the work do you fit a thicker radiator with a p1 with a 8 rib conversion. My intake is already pressing against the stock radiator.

Wild Bill pm me a price on that radiator to NJ. Thanks

Re: Help with cooling issues

Here is an upate on this. Cranked my car up and let it idle under the carport with the a/c on while data logging with my SCT programmer. The temps came up to 220 and seemed to stabalize so I took it for a spin. Highest temp I saw was 226 on a pretty open highway with a few red lights. Came back to my house with the temps at 222 and let it idle out in the driveway. Took about 10 minutes but the temps came up to 240 before I shut off the a/c. Outside temp was 93 with a heat index of 107.

I pulled the crossover plug and it took about 5oz. of water. At this point it was raining and the temps dropped to 82. I let it idle with the a/c on until the temps hit 202 and shut it off. So thats where I am now. What do you guys think? New radiator? New fan?

Re: Help with cooling issues

are you sure your thermostat is opening when it should? just cause its new doesnt mean its opening when it should.

No, I'm not sure how to tell. With the holes drilled it lets coolant circulate before it opens so all the hoses feel hot before it hits 180.

Re: Help with cooling issues

i always put a new thermo in a pot with water along with a thermometer you can see at what temp the thermo actually opens and the stove heats the water

ive seen on many occasions that whatever temp the thermo is it actually opened at a higher temp than it should have.

Re: Help with cooling issues

Hey Bill, if I order that LFP radiator from you tomorrow, when do you think it could be shipped to 70706?

Re: Help with cooling issues

Bringing this back from the dead for an update. I finally got round to installing the Mishimoto radiator this week and it has solved my cooliong problems. Temps rarely go over 180 with the a/c off and it will idle all day in 90+ with the a/c on and not go over 210.
