Truck guys I have questions

So I am wondering for you truck guys, what is the best tuner/tune for my 2010 F150 FX4 with 5.4L, to gain mpg?
Also got to figure out what CAI to run
Also need to get OH SH*T handles for the driver side (wife is wanting it) got find out where to buy that.

Any other MPG savers mods that I can do to the truck that yall can suggest will be great.

Re: Truck guys I have questions

K&N or similar cold air intake and a good exhaust to go with the tuner. Hypertech is pretty good and probably the easiest to use, while SCT/Bullydog will probably get the best results.

Re: Truck guys I have questions

Although I haven't added to my new Truck (yet) I still do use DiabloSport on my Mach 1. I also used it on the Bullitt I had. To me it was easier to use than others, problem is it is harder to find a tuner if you want a Dynotune, usually the SCT brand is better if you want a Dynotune done.

I'm not sure about the improvement in gas mileage but the Mach 1 will get 28 mpg on the highway with 3.73 gears. I do have long tubes and high flow cats with SLP cat back. Air intake is stock except for K&N.

For you wanting better mpg, as you already know, headers, exhaust and intake are the best methods. Some hotter firing coils also may help.

That forum is a treasure trove of information. I ened up with a wix drop in in my 5.0 because they said the K&N drop ins were causing maf issues. They also concluded that a cold air intake on the 5.0 didn't help much over the stock box. Do you research before buying. My buddy has a 08 5.4 screw 6.5 bed and no matter what he does he gets between 13-16. He's also lifting his truck and throwing on large tires so it will probably be less. He drives it like an old lady too. Given I live in the mountains of PA too so not much flat ground here.

big truck, big engine, big tires... uhm, big fuel consumption

unless you're really just looking for some bling, sounds like you are about to drop a bunch of money on mods that will take a long, long time before realizing any ROI on fuel economy

Thanks for the link, will have to check it out. be a little while before buying the tuner. be using the truck around the ranch so will be using to tow stuff also. be nice to just switch between tunes with whatever event comes up.

That is the thing, with this truck if its really not going to make a big different in a short period of time, I don't want to waste the money on it

theres really not much you can do to add much mpg, as mentioned it will take a looooooong time for any of that stuff to get your money back...if ever. How you use the right foot would probably make more difference than anything

It's the same thing as buying a muscle car. If you're worried about gas mileage, then you shouldn't even own one. I never got more than 12mpg on my 2000 F-150 Supercab 4X4 no matter how I drove (It had the 5.4). It was a great truck.

I had an 08 Expedition EL with the 5.4. I ran a towing/performance tune from 5 Star tuning. I gained a couple MPG from it. But the throttle response was worth the price alone. CAI didn't do anything except add noise. I still have it. If it'll work you're welcome to it for cost of shipping.

And just like our cars it's best to stick with stock COPs. But make sure the plugs are good.

Different head design. Around town I got 13-14mpg. On the freeway I'd get 17-18. That was with 24" rims. Towing was a different story though. I'd get 9-11 towing my boat. It's one of the reasons I went diesel.

Re: Truck guys I have questions

Ford's 5.4 loves fuel no matter what you do to it. My SRT-10 truck, 525hp got 13MPG. (my wife only got 9, hmmm)

Only thing I could really think of is changing the rear gears to more of a highway gear, but only if you drive on the highway a lot. It will kill towing.

Anything you do to a 5.4, you will never recover the money invested to get MPGs. Suck it up and let it suck it down.

I want a 5.0 F150 and put twin turbos in there..... (now you know my secret 'next' project) Just need the cash. lol

I am buying a new 2015 F150 FX4 with a 2.7 liter Eco Boost
Flame Blue.
Not sure if I should tune it or not.
I'm currently driving a 2008 Silverado with a 5.3 and it blows me away how much more power the little eco boost makes, max torque of 375 at a low 3000 RPM.
Not sure if I can improve on perfection.

My dad has a 2015 Eco Boost and we just did CB exhaust on his, sounds pretty good. I have a buddy with a 2012 Eco boost pushing some amazing HP/TQ numbers on his. make a little over 500hp and 600ft tq
he suggested for my dad to get his tuner from Livernois Motorsports, suppose to be outstanding with the eco boost.
I believe all his has is the exhaust/CAI/Tune to make his hp numbers and its the family truck.

If you don't mind a trip to DFW, schedule a tune at HPP on the dyno. Cannot get any better than a dyno tune. Only thing is they are about power, not mpg. My opinion is, you will get better bang for your bug on driver mods to save fuel than throwing parts at it. ROI does not really exist for mpg gains.

I understand
I figured it might not hurt to atleast do drop in k&n or atleast a cai
Then worry about a tune for towing when start pulling a horse trailer.

Re: Truck guys I have questions

Hey Ash..did you ever find a handle for the driver's side? I think it was stupid for Ford to drop that I use it everyday in my 2002 F150! One of the reasons I have not tried to buy a new truck believe it or not! It is so handy & safer for me as an older person...I won't give that feature up! Any sfter market?

Then worry about a tune for towing when start pulling a horse trailer.

the biggest thing with a towing tune on a gas motor usually seems to be the shift points. If youre not towing up and down a buncha big hills its probably fine. Does that truck have the tow/haul mode? That will change the shift timing and shift points for towing, it works very well in mine.
