Working Backwards, 4R70W to T56........
I say working backwards because everybody seems to be doing the manual to auto swap and not vice versa! I have swapped-in a T56 in pace of my auto. Have everything necessary in place; brake/clutch assembly, proper driveshaft, crossmember, etc. My last missing item is the trans harness. Any ideas on what harness to use? I would obviously like the closest to "plug-and-play" that I can get. Out of my options; 03-04 Cobra T56 harness (which I am having difficulty finding), existing auto Mach harness (which I have), or 03-04 manual Mach harness (haven't located yet), which of these would be my best option? My issues with each different harness are reverse lock-out, speedometer, main connecting plug, etc. Any ideas are appreciated!
Robert

Re: Working Backwards, 4R70W to T56........
I did the same thing. I bought a T56 trans harness from Steve @ Tousley Ford 1-800-328-9552. I took it to my shop and the shop just splice the main plug off of T56 harness on to my auto Mach harness. And use the reverse lock-out off the T56 harness for the reverse lock-out to work.

Thanks for the response Silver Bullet! What shop did you take it to? I mean, you can't just walk into a an auto electrical shop and say"Trans swap, make these work"? Did you have an electrical diagram? Were you certain that all the functions of the harness would work, etc? Thanks again for your help.

Re: Working Backwards, 4R70W to T56........
I did not have any electrical diagram I look everywere on the net for them. I just took mine to the lamotta performane that is the performane shop that I take my car to and have all my work done. When I had My car tune there he had a T56 apart on his table so I started to ask about if he could do a swap. He say it would be no problem for him. So he told me all the parts that I would need to do the swap if you want I could try and remember all of the parts. What I would say to do is call around to performane shops and ask if they have exp rebuilding a T56 and then ask they could do a 4R70W to T56 swap.

Thanks for the response SB. I have the swap complete! The only thing that I am lacking is the correctly wired harness. Maybe I will give Lamotta a call.

http://www.modularfords.com/2008/08/...mustang-cobra/ I know your not swapping to an auto, but it should be the same doing it backwards. The t-56 harness should be able to get picked up from Tousley ford for about 60 or 70 dollars. You will need the wires that control all the sensors, but you will be using the auto connection to connect it back to the stock wiring harness. Except for the reverse lockout. I would run the pigtail to the brake wires under the dash to make it work only when you have the brake pushed in. Might be able to find the wire in the auto harness that lets it release it into gear when you press the brake, but im not sure which wire that is. I think I read that wiring part about 50 times to make sure I understood it right and making sure I was doing stuff right. |

Thanks! I will keep and read through that post as well! I am lacking the auto harness at the moment to adapt to the T56 harness.

So this is what you've been up to... ditching the auto? Any other plans to the car?

Ha, yea I'm putting her back into street trim; 6 speed, Traction Lok (in lieu of spool), interior, etc. I've had my fun at the track, time to start driving her! Pretty sad when you pay insurance, registration, etc. and only put 5 (not a typo) miles a year on her.

Did you have an aftermarket cooler put on? Did you re-do the lines? I'm afraid to use the current setup and risk it blowing off again. |

Re: Working Backwards, 4R70W to T56........
Ran the stock lines, however I did have to bend them to conform to the headers. I did not run an aftermarket cooler, however I would suggest, especially for street driving. Mines almost ready for the street again!

Re: Working Backwards, 4R70W to T56........
Right on! Keep us updated on how you like the switch to the 6-speed.
Yeah, I just need new connectors as the clamps probably can't hold the heat/pressure. |
