Check out the writeup on Kenne Bell's site. When the engine is running the voltage is about 14v. Three extra volts or so is not a big jump from that, and is only increased when you are under boost. Or you can wire it to run all the time. I set mine to run constant @ 1/2 way up on the dial, and close to a full increase at the track. Didn't have a problem, and will consider doing it on the Mach someday.
Another thing, it's both current and voltage driving that pump. And the current is what taxes (heats) the wiring and the windings in the motor. If you run more voltage the pump will use less current for a given output. So it seems the slightly higher voltage could be actually easier on the pump...
