IMO...since you'll be in LA, I'd go to California Adventure in disneyland. They actually did a pretty good job putting together a bunch of cool california locations in one spot.
They have 'boardwalk' stuff from santa cruz, Monterey 'pier' stuff (with clam chowder similar to monterey bay, although not as good), HOllywood stuff...It's a pretty good 'summary' of California IMO.
