I, too, had thought about raising the entire main plate instead of just unscrewing each ball stud. Though, instead of using washers, I thought about using body shims. These are "U" shaped, and can be inserted between the main plate and the front/rear mounting brackets by just loosening the bolts (instead of having to completely remove the bolts as washers would require).
