I found the answer and it is this: the GSS342 pump is not a direct replacement unit because it is intended to be used on a return type fuel system where current is not variable, as opposed to the stock pump which uses variable current and doesn't return fuel to the tank once it is pumped to the fuel rails.

I have been told a Focus or Aviator pump will also work in our cars, but not Cobra pumps.

This thread is woefully inadequate and probably should not be a sticky because it could send somebody off in the wrong direction.
