yes thats normal, i believe its pipe thread, its tapered and thats how it seals.
I forgot to say coolant flow up out of the engine into the radiator then comes out the bottom through the thermostat and back to the engine. When the thermostat opens it blocks most of the flow from the bypass line. I would have to imagine the entire lower radiator hose should be about the same temp once the thermostat opens completely
