Yeah, stories like that are very common. But you need to remember that there are also many dealers that will install all different kinds of mods for you, and will continue to do warranty work on your car. You just need to find a mod-friendly dealer.
If you aren't sure, or aren't buddy-buddy with them, I'd wait until the warranty expires so you don't end up like that guy.
