I figure that or try heating just below it or both.
My non-mechanic dumb partially self stripped the 1/4 drive slot (thanks for the small hole Ford).

I have a stainless replacement one on the way from Ebay.
Yes the plug itself is metal. An easier way to get it off if you've stripped the slot is to CAREFULLY get some vise grips and ensure you just get the teeth on the little outside lip of the plug and slowly and CAREFULLY turn it off.

But to answer your question, yes I believe you could weld a nut on the top.
