I've built several rear ends for Ford 8" 8.8" and 9" rears and you do use a torque wrench to measure the resistance, just not your standard ft-lb wrench. It requires an in-lb wrench to get accurate measurements. For an 8.8 rear, it's about 10in-lbs for old bearings and about 20 in-lbs for new bearings.
