Generally you don't use 5th as a racing gear =) Lose top end? As in max speed? Well technically you would lower your "possible" top speed. But bigger gears will make it easier for your car to push...

Heh I had something like this happen to me in my Corrado. Turns out I nudged the fuses for the fan and it would randomly not work and caused the overheating. Hope the Mach is alright.
