Oil Separator/Catch Can driver or passenger side?

I'm sure this has come up some where in here but I can't find it. I'm trying to find out why an oil separator/catch can should be on either the driver's side, passenger side, or a combo of both.

I've heard you should do the separator on the driver's side and a catch can or prefilter on the passenger side, but I have also heard other conflicting ideas.

Re: Oil Separator/Catch Can driver or passenger side?

Unless the engine is so broken that the crankcase pressure (blow-by forces) becomes great enough to cause the air in the pcv system to flow the wrong direction backwards into the intake tube, there is no practical use for a pre-filter or oil separator on the passenger side.

Using a separator on the driver's side, however, can be useful provided the design of the can is adequate for the application.

Here's the flow- The pcv system begins at the air intake tube connection to the passenger side cam cover where the intake air travels down through the cam cover. The air charge then flows into the crankcase where it sweeps up dirty/acidic combustion byproducts before making it's way up the driver's side cam cover, out of the pcv valve and into the upper intake where the pcv air is then mixed and burned with the normal incoming air/fuel mixture.

Thanks a million. I had know idea that's how it worked. Makes perfect sense now to put it on the drivers side.
