New guy from Southwest KY.

What’s going on fellas? I recently purchased a Comp Orange Mach 1 about a month ago. I’m currently in the process of getting the engine out for a rebuild and also needs paint work. This my third Mustang and first New Edge; other two are a 07 GT and 08 Roush 427R.
Anyway the Mach 1 was abandoned at a friend’s shop and I had the opportunity to buy it. I’ve wanted a New Edge for a few years now. Since I missed the opportunity to buy my Buddy’s 2V and I’m still regret not getting it. After that I’ve looked at getting a New Edge. My budget could only afford a Bullitt. So after a deal fell through on a DHG Bullitt I pursed this Mach 1. After getting a title for it the owner of the shop called me and I bought the car for a very good price I think. Car has 33k miles and the interior is in fantastic shape. Here she is:

This is the current progress:

I haven’t had much time to work on it. My boss has been sick and I’m basically running the business (auto repair shop). But the goal is to have everything fix and done by spring.

Well fellas, figured I’d update the thread about the car. I haven’t worked on it in a while but I manage to pick up some 97 Cobra cams (47K miles) for a good price. I should be receiving them sometime next week. Once the engine is disassembled and sent to my machine shop; I’ll have the cams sent down for proper degreeing.

Finally able to work on the engine today. As seen there’s metal debris on the cam mounts and cams themselves coming from the oil journals. After an inspection it doesn’t look like there’s an damage on the heads, valves, and pistons. But my machine shop will validate that once the engine is down there. The plan is to have the rotating assembly out of it next weekend. The following week I’ll have the engine and cobra cams down at the machine shop for inspection and repairs if needed. Cobra cams will also be properly degreed by them. Once the engine is down there I’ll start searching for a full intake system including the shaker system. I don’t have anything in front of the throttle body except what I’m assuming is the piece that channels in air to the filter housing. Anyone have a stock CAI system lying around that they don’t want? I sure could use it. And the saker system too. 👍🏻

I’ve got a diagnosis on my engine. Now I have a question for you guys. The machine shop stated the car has a dished piston and when I was down there last week. I can confirm it has a dished piston, just a very slight dish. My question to those that would know, did our cars come with dished pistons from the factory? I was under the impression they were flat tops. I’m just trying to make sure it retains a stock bottom end. As this won’t be my hot rod, my Roush has that job. I want to make sure this thing is getting what came from the factory, as I know nothing about my car. Due to it being abandoned and I don’t know what they did to the engine internal wise, if they actually did anything to it. Thanks for any responses.

Re: New guy from Southwest KY.

Machs did not come with a dished piston. Terminators, however, did. Is the block aluminum or iron?

Recon 02-12-2018 09:49 PM

It’s aluminum. And after many articles read and reading builds of others, it seems that the stock pistons lean heavily towards a -3cc dish. But I’ll confirm it with Ford tomorrow.

Ok I was holding off on an update until I got a proper diagnosis, by my machine shop, of the damage. We saw 3 spun rod bearings while disassembling the engine. So crank was most likely done. After getting the engine down to the machine shop it turns out the damage was far worse than that. I figured there’d be some metal debris in the oil, proven right when there was debris on the cams. (See earlier photos)
So one piston made contact with the head, and there was catastrophic oil contamination due to metal debris. Damage: 1 piston done, 1 rod done, crank done, the remaining 7 rods and pistons can be saved but will need to be reworked, cams done, lifters done, timing components done, etc. As my machine shop stated the engine was very close to being totally destroyed. The good news, Block is saved and fixed, along with the heads. And yes the head that was hit by the piston is repaired. After finding out the pistons are actually dished (-3cc) he finally found one after about a week of searching. Now the very bad news: the crank. He’s called nearly everyone going well into Florida and all the way to California. No one has one in F6TECE specs, and ever so conveniently Ford has discontinued said crank. So we’re searching for a used one, or I might have to bite the bullet and get my crank repaired. Or potentially getting an Eagle or Manley crank. We’re trying to get all my options on the table before deciding anything. There’s also some more good news (not sarcasm); I sent nearly all the engine down to the machine shop. The car was from the east coast and the saltwater air did a number on the bare aluminum. Photos of the engine after cleaning:

Ok little update I found a crank for the car. It’s currently at the machine shop getting looked at and from the phone call I had with them I should expect the engine to be ready.

Lot of good work taking care of a rare CO. great job. I would just buy a used mach 1 engine at this point, but if you want to build it and upgrade the internals that would be cool too.

I considered it, but how many Mach 1 engines have 33k miles now? And this car is rare enough that I wanted to make an effort to save the original engine. If everything goes smoothly I should expect the engine to be ready sometime next week. Then I’ll start putting it together.
This car isn’t going to be my hot rod, my Roush has that job. Only engine mods I plan to do is cams and headers while maintaining stock unported intake and heads.

nice to see new members.
nice too see someone restoring a mach and valuing the stock form.
I have changed mine quite a bit but pulled the stock motor and had a new one built for the job.
my stocker only has 13 000 miles.
I figured I would hold onto it and keep them together.

This car is rare enough and has low enough miles that I want to keep it close to stock. I am modding things but it’s more on the lines of what I think ford should’ve done to the Mach 1 to begin with. I mean it has a GT body. The Mach 1 is special and holds a lot of history. It deserves a unique body for itself. That’s why most mods with the exterior will be 100% factory ford mods: ambers, Terminator mirrors, 99/01 front bumper, Terminator trunk lid, etc. Then interior will be returned to stock colors; previous owner painted many interior pieces silver to match the center console. Engine will remain stock for the most part besides cams and longtubes; that’s all I want to do, no porting whatsoever. I plan on a Terminator T56 and already have a Terminator IRS being held for me. That’s pretty much all I have planned minus a few minor touches (coil covers, side valance, etc.) and miscellaneous “return to stock” plans.

Mach 1 shifter trim ring, boot, Mach 1 shift knob

I also brought the car home. Reason being is the car was sitting outside at the shop so it’s in the barn now on the trailer, protected from the elements. The engine is also at my house; I’m thinking I’ll just reassemble it at home, then take everything to the shop and install it in the car.
Sorry about about the terrible grammar in this post.

Little update:
I started on the engine and I’m waiting on more parts for it. I’ve also been doing some research of what I’m wanting to do with the car and a few things have changed. I’ll get into those at a later date. I also made an offer on this yesterday, and waiting on a reply:

The color doesn’t do much for me but my intentions are to use it as a parts car.

We got the crank in and had a couple of issues. Issues arose during torque angle and were resolved with new parts ordered from ford. That went on for about 2 weeks, fast forward to Sunday.

My boss had the suspicion the rings were wrong so they went to the machine shop for inspection. After confirmation they were correct the machine shop installed the rings. Got them back and installed the pistons and rods Sunday. Things went pretty smoothly just time consuming. Both torque sequences were done along with torque angle. Next will be the heads which have the B head cobra cams in them for now.
Later down the road I’ll swap them out for some Comps. I’ve discussed with a friend of mine about some other modifications to consider doing to the engine. It’s nothing major, my intentions are still the same as day one. Make this car what I want and not what is the norm. It’s will remain N/A but it will not be a max effort N/A build. No porting will be done but some other mods will be considered. All depends how the funds look once the car is running.
Which is the goal right now, nothing will be spent on mods, at this moment, unless it’s a necessity in getting the car road worthy
