Polished third brake light

Thanks to 03Shadow Grey I polished my lens instead of buying a new one. I started out with some Meguiar's headlight restorer for $25. There are way less expensive restorer kits but given how bad my lens, was I opted for the Meguiar's kit. It is a 5 part process. I first used a 10mm socket to take the lens off the car. I used an orbital sander and wet sanded my lens with 320 grit sand paper. The kit comes with both 1000 and 3000 grit sand paper that you stick onto a foam sander that is included with the kit. You then use a wool buffer that you attach to a drill and polish it to a super high shine. Then you apply some coating that is supposed to harden the lens. It takes a while to sand it with the 320 but the rest of the process goes very quickly. It took me about 1 hour and as you can see, well worth the time and effort.

Pretty impressive. Does that stuff that hardens the lense also seal/protect it?

Re: Polished third brake light
After having it refinished for one day, it seems like applying the coating at the very end may not be a good idea. It almost made the plastic sort of melt and then reharden but it seems like it is much softer now. I just handled it and my fingerprints stuck into the acrylic. My recommendation is to not put on the coating at the end. I may just get another beat up lens and refinish it because it just doesn't seem like it's going to hold up.
