My original one crapped out on me. And putting in an aftermarket clutch, plate and TOB had brought nothing but grief. I've gone back Ford on ll affected parts, but nothing is the same as it was.

The crickets are chirping. Again. Second bearing in the last 20k miles. This one is a parts store special. The one before it was ford.
I'm thinking new ford fork, pivot ball stud, and oem bearing. Don't know what else to do. Seems to be an achilles heal for these cars.

My original lasted 84k miles and then I swapped to a different clutch and it's been an ongoing saga since then. I'm beginning to think that the factory quadrant/adjusting mechanism is the only thing that keeps the bearings alive. Of course, my stock quadrant fell out in three or four different pieces when I was putting in the steeda quad and fwa, and then I tossed the pieces in the trash. :SMASH:

I've ran Ford and Timken with good luck. And I usually have it touching the pressure plate. I know a lot of people say there needs to be a gap between the bearing and pressure plate. It really seems hit or miss. You could always do the free play mod to push the bearing away from the pressure plate.

i think theres definitely some good luck/bad luck involved if you get one that lasts or not.

I think the other important part is proper adjustment, promotion powertrain has a video on proper adjustment with aftermarket stuff. I subscribe to the theory that it should be just touching the fingers of the PP with no real preload.

I do wonder if the surface of the PP fingers on the aftermarket stuff are perhaps not as level/even all the way around and therefore putting more load on one section of the bearing leading to premature failure

If someone with a completely bonestock and untouched car could pop the inspection cover off and take a picture, I think that could be a very useful piece of information.

I'm on my third tob. Last week I installed a quick release quadrant

I need to spend alittle more time adjusting things but I think between it and the free play mod (Haven't done yet) I think I can make this tob last awhile longer.

^This is what I think is going on with my cricket noise making TOB lol.

I made a freeplay mod for mine and keep mine just barely off the PP, but I’ve tried both. My pedal rattled bad with the preload Maximum Motorsports calls for. Mine is a FRPP TOB from American Muscle. It has around 25k miles on it. It will put out a really quick chirp when fully warmed up as you push the pedal down. When it chirps for longer than that split second, I will make an adjustment with my MM firewall adjuster. Not a big deal to me...after submitting to it of course lol.

That's very generous, Jeff! They are kinda expensive though, and are you sure you don't want to keep it just incase the tob woes strike you too?

I went with a Timken TOB when mine started sounding like rocks in a tin can. That was about 5 years ago and maybe 15-20k miles. At the time, I believe I read a lot of positive comments about it over on SVTPerformance forums.

Just the topic I was about to ask about. I am looking at a Exedy mach stage 1 clutch from AM since there on sale and read alot about the tob in the package was bad, buy a ford racing. I was going to ask if the tob and pilot from FR was worth the 60 extra bucks :) I will see if I cant get a pic since mine is still stock atm. Had to pull the trigger,lol , the sale ended tonight. Grabbed a pivot ball too !

It's very fixable. It's a matter of "adjusting" the factory bump stop on the clutch pedal so it can lift far enough to pull the TOB off the pressure plate. There are a few things to be modified but it's fairly straight forward and takes all of a hose clamp and a piece of scrap metal cut to size. It's been years since I've done it so would have to take a look for more details if anybody is still struggling with this.

Original got replaced with new clutch when 3rd engine got put in by Ford at about 60,000 miles. New ford one was still fine at 122,000. Only related mod was a steeda shifter.

I put the recommended FRPP TOB on mine when I just did my trans swap. The only thing that I did that is different from some is that I covered the TOB, clutch fork mounting and pivot surfaces with Dr. Tranny Assemblee Goo. It's been less than a week but all seems well thus far. I have a centerforce DF clutch with a stock cobra flywheel and it is a complete dream thus far.

Couldn't there be a return spring using a long carburetor spring to pull the clutch fork all the way back against the cable? A hole would need to be made in the fork cover to have the cable go through and then it could be hooked on one of the tabs off the tranny. If it works, I'll get pics.

I’m curious as well.

So what tob, and pilot bearings come with the OE Valeo clutch kit, 52802015?

As I said above I bought the Exedy clutch kit but its been way too cold to get out there and install so I decided to check on the tob and pilot. The Tob that came with the kit had absolutely no numbers or markings , the pilot was a M7600A for 75-95 V8 not the M7600B that I need. While searching prices on the FR tob I noticed a number on the casting on 2 different sites 614014 which actually comes up a National Bearing which is 30$ cheaper packaged by ford.
