switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
so when i was swapping valve covers (which i should have gotten a picture) there was some junk (alittle bite, not much) on the springs and chite, so after my buddy caught it, told me i need to switch to Royal Purple, may cost alittle more, but worth the money, which i'm down to using the best stuff in my Mach, for sure worth it, it just kills me that mobil 1 would do that. i use 5w-20 and from the research i've done its suppose to be one of the best to use.
Has anyone else had this problem my buddy has been a master mech for years, and i know he knows his chite he also has a mach and has been on here, but not any more, so i trust what he tells me ASh |

In my opinion, Stick to the Mobil 1.

Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
Shoulda seen my car when i swapped the intake cams. Diesel oil FTW. It had 85k miles on it at the time, and it looked brand spanking new. Not a single spec of rust, corrosion, black junk, nothing. Spotless.
I'd stick with mobil 1 5w30 if your not a diesel oil fan. |

Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
5w-20 is too thin. I'd at least get 5w-30 Royal Purple if thats what you want.
Lower the second number is, the more wear your causing on your engine at higher operating temps. And only benefit is your probably saving .25mpg and getting an extra 1hp. With your car being boosted and everything, I wouldn't be running 5w-20. Its your car though! |

Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
With as tight as the clearances are on these motors there is a reason ford put 5/20 in them. My motor has been run on moble 1 since day one and it looked brand new inside when we pulled it apart (except for the headgasket) I'll never run anything but moble 1 in a modular motor.
Usually when you have black burnt oil built up it from lack of changing the oil. |

Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
I've heard bad stories running RP through your engine. Only place RP will go is in my diff. I'll stick to Mobil up front.

Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
if you that the time to look at the testing people have done on all the oils mobil and rp are both junk.
i use quakerstate horsepower. it is very close to vr1. also with a bosch filter. after 3000 hard miles its just barley dark. Eneos is another good oil. |

Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
I don't know what to think about this whole oil branding thing. I used Mobil 1 full synthetic, 5w20 in my stock motor for over 60k miles, never a problem.
When I was having my Aluminator installed, we were on the phone with a Ford Racing tech about an unrelated issue, and he said to break the engine in for 500 miles on regular fossil blend 5w30 oil, then switch to a full synthetic 5w30, but to never go back to the 5w20! Almost four years and 12k miles later, of using Mobil 1 5w30, here my car sits with a broken engine! How much the brand and weight of the oil played in the engine failure, I have no clue. Maybe we'll learn something more when it is finally torn down in the next couple of weeks, but one thing is for sure, the rear main seal and bearing are toast, and I'm guessing at least one, or more, rod bearings are gone, and possibly the oil pump! |
Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
In my own unofficial Oil Test I did some years bike, I found that Royal Purple worked the best at first, but it stop working after a very short time frame, like 500 miles or so. I refuse to use Royal Purple. It ranked 5th of the 5 oils I tested on my motorcycles. Mobil 1, placed 1st.
Hope this helps. |

Re: switching from mobil 1 to Royal Purple
almost 90k miles, hard miles and Mobil 1 5/20 has always been great too me. To further push the debate, and you guys can roast me all you want but I change my oil every 10k miles. When I change the oil, it always amazes me how clean it is. Motorcraft oil filter
In my truck, V10 Viper, I run Mobil1, change every 10k miles as well and never a single problem. 80k miles on that engine. Mopar oil filter Based on the oil that is drained out in both vehicles, I really change the oil because of my desire to change the filter. I cannot argue with myself over this and have a hard time changing brands, these motors have run perfectly the entire time. These are daily drivers and my goal has always been 100k miles which based on my last compression checks, I hope to surpass these estimates. I'm the original owner on the Mach, the truck was used but only had 3k miles on it. However, I am still wondering why people run the diesel oil? |
