Fuel Pump

Here is a chart that i found with the results from a fuel pump flow test. I thought this would be helpful for all of you that are upgrading pumps for power adders.

My freind hate's BAP...sid they made his pump fail after awhile....anyone else experience this? Thanks for the great chart!

I dont like Boost a Pumps because they make it harder to diagnose fuel problems. If your in tank fuel pump dies the BAP will still pull fuel threw the stock pump and your car will run. This could cause you to run lean when you hit WOT.

I'm gonna raise a flag here:bs:

Boost a pump is a step up transformer that raises the voltage to the pump. If the intank fails electrically or mechanically how would the BAP pull fuel through it?

My bro had a T Rex pump in his blown 5.0, his in tank pump went out and the Trex allowed the car to run still. Once the car hit WOT he went lean and blew his head gasket. we couldnt figure out the problem, at first we thought it was his injectors. Then we thought maybe his fuelpressure reg, and we finnaly figured out it was his pump. We ended up just putting a biger pump on the car, and ditching the T-rex.

Ok, 7 months later:
An inline pump added to the system is not the same as a BAP.

PREACH!
upping a systems normal operating voltage range can cause havoc... stock stuff is like 12vdc +/-2 I believe...

Re: Fuel Pump

Huh? Preach? Yeah, I do that sometimes I guess.

BAPs don't cause problems that I've experienced or heard about.

I've heard of a couple of duders complaining that it burnt out their pumps.

my point is that if somethings made to operate at 14vdc max, and you push it up to 17vdc or higher just to get more flow out of the fuel pump... its gonna cut the life expectancy short by alot.

what else do you preach about? :p

Gotta agree on this one. Regardless of what people's experiences have been, A BAP is a band aid. Put another way: I just ordered a Procharger 8# kit and no way in hell am I gonna rely on a boost a pump as a long term solution. .02

BTW: Thanks for the chart Wicked, It saved me alot of hassle.

Oh man.

Why is it that so many people use the KB BAP setup. It can't be that bad.

Re: Fuel Pump

I would stick with the factory stuff, so you aren't messing with voltage.

Re: Fuel Pump

It seems that the wire upgrade is a simple fix for the 17 volts.
I'm deffinatly going with the BAP when it comes down to it.

Re: Fuel Pump

Check out the writeup on Kenne Bell's site. When the engine is running the voltage is about 14v. Three extra volts or so is not a big jump from that, and is only increased when you are under boost. Or you can wire it to run all the time. I set mine to run constant @ 1/2 way up on the dial, and close to a full increase at the track. Didn't have a problem, and will consider doing it on the Mach someday.

Another thing, it's both current and voltage driving that pump. And the current is what taxes (heats) the wiring and the windings in the motor. If you run more voltage the pump will use less current for a given output. So it seems the slightly higher voltage could be actually easier on the pump...

I did alot more research....I'm using a BAP...people will say all sorts of stuff, this seems cost effective especially since (like Bonestock said) KB uses them with their Cobra Kits...thats good enough for me...instead of hearsay. :smack: (to myself)

If wired correctly the BAP is fine for most people.

Re: Fuel Pump

So what kind of fuel setup would needed at 450 hp. Say it is through cams and 100 shot of nitro booze(with most all other boltons)

Re: Fuel Pump

Yeah, my buddy advised against the BAP as well. I ordered the cobra tank and pump through him and his dealership. Stock set up and works great. That's why I am partial to factory performance parts. All the research has already been done. Gives added peace of mind.

any body that uses the bap for extended periods of time upgrade the guage of wiring.that seems to cure most of the bap horror stories ive heard about.

Re: Fuel Pump

i posted about a bap yesterday and it didnt sound good.what do you guys think about running a 1 to 3 gallon tank fuel system to just run my n2o .right now the pump is maxed out with only a 100 shot but if i ran the wet kit by its self with 116 oct the cost is not that much and down the road i can run 2 small kits

Re: Fuel Pump

so is the focus fuel pump good enough fuel pump upgrade for a s/c. or is the gt 40 supercar better. please pm me and let me know.

Re: Fuel Pump

x2..i just put a p1sc on my 03 mach and have dual focus pumps i'm going to be using. Also is there any modifying that needs to be done in order to use the dual pumps with factory tank and harness?

Thinking of buying a walbro pump, can someone validate the GSS342 will replace the factory pump in our cars with no modification required? Found it on a couple sites but when I go to walbro site the picture they show is way different from the canister shown elsewhere (Summit, lethal performance, etc).

I found the answer and it is this: the GSS342 pump is not a direct replacement unit because it is intended to be used on a return type fuel system where current is not variable, as opposed to the stock pump which uses variable current and doesn't return fuel to the tank once it is pumped to the fuel rails.

I have been told a Focus or Aviator pump will also work in our cars, but not Cobra pumps.

This thread is woefully inadequate and probably should not be a sticky because it could send somebody off in the wrong direction.

Here's a better explanation:
