Cams?
I have an 03 tr with 9500 miles on it... im looking to get a bit more power out of the car so i am thinking about getting cams or doing an eaton swap(not sure about the eaton swap because of the amount of driving i do), the question is which cams( if i go this route). I am thinking about the CCA-106300 Comp Cams "Naturally Aspirated-Hi-Perf.Street" 99-04 Cobra/Mach1 or the ford racing gt cams. which are better? also could you please post dyno results with the cams.... any opinions and/or info is greatly appreciated thanks
forgot to say that i drive this car 250 miles back and forth from mississippi state university every couple of weeks and its a daily driver, im averaging about 900 miles a month if this makes a difference... get gears

Re: Cams?
GT cams are way too mild to justify the expense of the swap. Either go with 96-98 cobra intake cams, FR500 cams and springs or custom grinds that don't require springOh, and defintely gears, nothing less than 4.10s.
96-98 intake cams will cost about $125, FR cams and springs about $600 and custom comps will be in the $1200 range. |
Re: Cams?
^^^^^what he said. You cant beat 96-98 cobra intake cams for the price. Best bang for the buck by far. Gains from what I have seen others get is typically 20-25 hp. Ill be adding these to my setup when i get a stage 2 port on my heads.

Re: Cams?
Out of curiousity, what is the typical cost to have a shop install cams...?

Re: Cams?
$1500 labor for my crower stage 2 with valve spring and retainers.

Re: Cams?
as i said earlier i have to drive back and forth from college (250 miles away) so im not gonna do gears cause of gas... i would like to know hom cams and/or an eaton swap would effect my car good or bad, and which is better... prices of both would be great also i would like to know pretty much all the details about both.... compare them...... i need an expert please

Re: Cams?
 YOu hardly ever go over 2k rpm....but you wnat another performance mod!? I don't get it, what am I missing!?
As stated before GET GEARS! They will NOT change your MPG that much at all! I thiink that I lost 1-2mpg when I went from stock to 4.10 gears! You did worse than that with gas cost when you got your tuner casue not you have to buy more expensive gas! 1. Gears (4.10) 2. 1/2" intake spacer 3. Pulley's (Controversy on this one) 4. Electric WP (controversy on that one) 5. LT headers 6. Cams (the 106300 are good but I recommend Custom Grind Cams) or 1. Gears (3.73) 2. LT Headers 3. Eaton Swap |

Re: Cams?
I'd wait until I graduated college and had a regular yob before I started doing major mods to my stang but that's me...I did cams because I had my motor rebuilt and plan on adding at least 4.30s this winter, but the natural progression of mods for our cars is bolt-ons, gears then cams. Either way when you add cams that are mid-level or higher you're going to need gears. That being said, when I had 4.10s in my '02 GT my gas mileage went up a little.

Re: Cams?
4.10's are a great mod....really wakes up the car and relatively cheap when you compare it to other things. I don't pay attention to gas mileage but if it did change, it wasn't that much.

so i think im ok with my decision in my car |
Re: Cams?
If you do get cams you're going to want to get LTs as well, there are plenty of people around here, myself included who have seen 350+ rwhp with cams and full exhaust but the power skews towards the upper RPMs depending on how aggressive you want to go which is why most will agree on adding gears as well.
I have the 106400s with a good tune and daily drive the car. Currently I have no problems with stalling and running A/C full blast during the summer. Right now I get about 2 mpg less per tank w/ heavy traffic (**** school kids) and some city driving when I commute to and from work while flooring it every chance I get. It's hard to not want to rev it up and **** because it sounds and feels awesome. :23: After doing some research, I pretty much picked the cams my builder recommended, which basically fell in line with what a lot of people were saying around here. Biggest thing for me was deciding what a really wanted out of my car. |
Re: Cams?
You're worried about MPG? When I had 4.56's I did an experiment, I topped off the tank and went about 100 miles on the hi-way with the cruise control set to 55mph. I pulled off and filled the tank up...my MPG? 29.xx (I don't remember the exact number anymore). I would think with 4.10s you'll be just fine.
BTW if you're that concerned leave your car alone. The more work you have done the less reliable and the less fuel efficient your car becomes. I would suggest you purchase a cheap-o commuter car to drive back and forth to college. A little 4-banger that gets 40+ mpg would be ideal for your round trip to college, the bonus would be that you can purchase a cheap beater for less than what you'd pay for cams + labor! |
Re: Cams?
If you want to do an eaton swap then Id recommend building the motor first. If you dont get into it that much then you could probly do the swap on the stock motor and be ok.
I have a built motor and only making 9 lbs of boost the car made 476 to the tire on conservative timing. Thats already way more power than the stock motor could handle. If you want to know how it drives....well it drives like stock....The only difference is the tire melting power. If i baby it I get 300 miles per tank which is about 23 mpg. If i put my foot in it I get 200 miles per tank and I have 4.10s. So your mpg is gonna be all in how you drive it. |
Re: Cams?
i payed $700 for my stage 2 cams there regrinded from sean hyland motorsports and then ported my heads along with bolt ons and made 361hp here is a sound clip
