ABS light....

So I did a search and found some threads an this topic but not many people had actually ever responded to if they had fixed the problem. The ABS light turns on randomly under normal driving conditions, stays on for a bit and resets when I turn the car off. I got new rims and tires (265/35/18's and 295/35/18's), a couple of weeks ago, but I'm pretty sure thats NOT the problem. Most people agreed it was the ABS unit.....a $900 dollar fix. For those that replaced the unit did that turn off your light for good. Just want to fix the problem as the light is irratating and I don't think it will pass inspection.....

with 18s ive seen alot of machs with the abs light on.. and right after they mount the rims too. i myself saw it happen to my car one day that i try a friends set of 18s.
another reason why im sticking with 17s

Wonder if you unhooked the battery and truned the likes on for 30 minutes it would force the system to adjust to the 18s. Just a thought

Re: ABS light....

I could be wrong here but with the tire sizes listed your wheel/tire combo makes for different diameters front and rear. The sensor thinks that there is some slippage because the fronts, being smaller than the rears, are turning faster than the rears.

Try swapping the stockers (or any combo where the diameters are consistent front to rear) and see if the light goes away. If it does the ABS module is working properly.

Re: ABS light....

you are correct in the fact the tires are slightly different in height....but the traction light is not turning on, just the ABS. In all the threads I read through most people agreed that such a small difference in height would not turn the ABS light on. I did not unhook the battery to see if that would change anything....will try that this weekend. I know some people had the same problem and were thinking of changing the ABS sensor...anybody do this?

I have 18's, no ABS light on. I'm wondering if your sensors are ok, odds are one is bad or maybe something is screwed up, check your fuse. Or if you want the light off the easy way and don't need ABS, pull the fuse or the light bulb in the guage cluster.

lol ive been running 18's on my mach for over 5 years now and have never seen the ABS light. ran them on my previous gt for 3 years without seeing the light.......

why not check to see if there are any codes.........could be as simple as a wheel sensor.

If unplugging the battery doesn't work I'll see if it's throughing any codes. If its something as simple as a wheel sensor I can fix that no big deal, but if its going to cost me $900 to fix the ABS unit.... Sheet....I don't need no stinking ABS. Seriously though its a safety feature thats not needed if you prepare ahead. Plus I never like it on the track anyway....

i forgot to mention that those wheels had tires with a 35 profile in front and a 45 in the back.. maybe that was the problem.

Got to be the tire size differance. Put the stock tires and rims on and see what happens.

I'm pretty sure thats what it is but how do I get it to go away with the new tires? I'm not gonna run stock rims and tires just to have the light on, can I fool it into turning off? Just last night when I started up the car it was on (the first time it was on when I started it) but the traction control was also off and wouldn't turn on. Even though I almost always turn it off, I like being able to turn it on in bad weather....
