4v cam specs: Stock, FRPP and Aftermarket

This will be updated as more specs are gathered, Happy Reading.

As of now, the document includes cams from Comp Cams, Crower, Sean Hyland (SHM), Lunati, Crane, Bullet Cams, FRPP and of course all the stock 4V cams and others have come across.

Here is a neat program that will calculate the opening/closing events and overlap as the lobe centers are changed:

The only way to get the real specs is to check them yourself. I checked some 99 intake cams last night and they have 202 degrees duration, only 2 deg less than the 96-98 intake cams.

Here is an update for asymmetrical lobes from Bullet (not all the ones listed on the above chart are new style asymmetrical) Some of these lobes don't exist at the time I wrote this, but they will be available by the end of the week.

Intake and/or exhaust profiles

Duration@050/lift at valve assuming 1.80 ratio (the real ratio varies with lift)

206/400 - little bit more aggressive version of the 96-98 Cobra
215/425
214/500
219/500
224/500
229/500
215/525
220/525
225/525
230/525

Exhaust only (don't ask, Bullet is hardcore like that, their exhaust specific lobes are very differently shaped):
213/425
217/425
213/475
218/475
223/475
228/475
233/475

There are many other bigger ones all the way to 272 duration, but getting past whats here is pretty much race only RPM levels so I didn't see the need to list them.

Comp offers two ramp rates for the 4v modular. Do you know how these ramp rates compare to Comps more aggressive lobe? Definately interesting options you're giving us. Appreciate you going out on a limb to innovate for the forgotten modulars.

As I was told NOTHING is more aggressive than the 525 lift intake series they have. Its more aggressive than the 500 and the 550 lift that share the same duration.

Bullet has a minimum of 4 different lobe profiles for modulars (and probably more if counting the pre Mark Chacon era of which I have never used) I am tight enough with Mark that if we decide on a duration/lift that doesn't exist he will just make it for me.

BTW - anyone feel free to kick out some other lobes you would like to see and if they make sense I will forward to Mark. If he sees a use for it consider it made.

I've spoken with Comp and they have far more than two ramp rates available. Also, I've seen some .500" lift cams with much longer .200" and .400" durations than what Comp shows in their lobe catalog. Take a look at the Comp lobe sheet in the attachment.

I believe that. They spend more time working on ramp profile than anything else. What I was referring to is the two lobes that 99.9% of 4v modular customers purchase, the Extreme RPM or the Extreme-R series. I'm sure Comp offers pretty anything you want within the confines of longevity in terms of ramp rates.

Sounds good. Do you forsee any longevity issues for a daily driver or would this be considered more of a "race" profile best used for limited duty?

The valve spring is the only issue, the wilder the lobe the better the spring will need to be. Spring wise there are many issues to its longevity, the higher end springs are made with better wire and surface treated to last twice as long in race conditions. How that time transfers to street conditions hard to say.

That's secret squirrel stuff.

Comps lobe sheet only shows one lobe profile for each lobe number, but there are actually many. The reason is they don't want to give away their secrets. I can say the ramp rates are mucho different.

did i miss the Crower specs in the link?

also, what's a good turbo cam setup? or should i just use early intake cams and stock exhaust and save my few hundred dollars for other parts?

96-98 intake cams and your stock exhaust cams work great in turbo combos. Install the intake cams at 110-108 and the turbo will spool very quick and make a lot of power.
