Mercon LV

I read that Ford switched their spec from Mercon III to Mercon V in the TR3650 trans. I've got some Mercon LV left over from a trans. fluid change on my F-150 and I was wondering if I can use that in my car?

Is Mercon LV ok for a substitute instead of Mercon V?

Re: Mercon LV

I did some internet searching and found one article that says V and LV are NOT interchangeable. Apparently LV is fully synthetic, whereas V is not.

Dang.. that was gonna' save me some money. Mercon ain't cheap. Oh well.

Motorcraft site has good descriptions of what each type is for.

This last time I changed my tranny fluid, I went with Pennzoil Synchromesh (3501). It’s not synthetic, so I’ll likely change it yearly or every other year. So far, it’s been the smoothest shifting experience is had by far. Prior to that, I used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Mercon III is hard to find anymore and it seems this tranny does so much better with a non-synthetic fluid. From what I’ve read about it, it appears to be due to the synchros this tranny has.

Re: Mercon LV

In checking on some stuff for my wife's Duramax, I found a thread from an engineer who retired from Allison after 30+ years. He helped write the specs for Dex III and Dex VI. Since Dex III is an obsolete fluid, it isn't controlled by GM anymore and companies can basically do whatever they want with it to make it meet the specs. So to make sure that Allison transmissions had an alternative that met their specifications of the original Dex III but be synthetic, they developed the TES 295 fluid specification. I'm currently running Pennzoil Synchromesh in my T-56. The next time that I change the fluid, I will be going with the TES 295 fluid. The Allison website lists several makers of this fluid but the easiest one for me to find locally was at O'Reilly with the part number BP-ATFSYN-1. It's $55 a gallon here locally and after buying two gallons for my wife's truck, they started stocking it. Any store can order it as it is usually a DC item unless the store sells a lot of DMax stuff.

Thanks guys. Anymore input on fluids for the 3650? I'm going to change mine while I'm installing a new shifter this fall. Any shared knowledge on what to buy and how much I'll need is welcomed.

I think I've already got some Syncromesh in my garage so I may just use that and do the 3.2 quarts like people are saying. I don't put a ton of miles on the car so it should last me a while between changes.
