Motor oil
 

My car has 56,000 miles on it and I get the occasional smoke on start up. I just installed a jlt pcv Pre-filters to see if that help and I’m thinking about switching my oil from motor craft to a high mileage oil to se if it helps soften the seals since I have been putting less than 2k miles per year on it. Do you recommend conventional or synthetic oil? Also between mobile 1 and valvoline

The high mileage stuff is a gimmick IMO. Get rid of the JLT's and get some good cans on there. The puff on start up could be valve seals going out. If that's the case no oil is going to help.

The JLT's are junk?!! Dang... I just received mine in the mail. One for each side. What are considered good ones now-a days?

I have the JLT stuff on mine and the driver side definitely collects some oil. I havent checked the line going to the pass side prefilter for oil lately.

The occasional smoke on start up is most likely coming thru the PVC system so your oil separators should cure that. I use the high mileage Mobil 1. Car has 150,000 miles and I have tracked the crap out of it for the last 12 years and it shows no signs of giving up. All vitals check out great.

Lots of opinions on this topic. Do a search on motor oil on the forum here.
I went with a heavier oil after reading several posts.
The consensus seems to be that the 5W20 oil is to lite and generally was only recommended for a small % of fuel savings and better emissions.
Although people seem to have run the 5W20 for some time with no issue.

5W30 Motorcraft syn-blend for me. I have a 5.0 Coyote engine and this 4.6 3V engine that I feed the same oil and they've got 260,000 miles combined on them with no mechanical issues.

What’s the correct capacity with filter change? 6 or 6.5 quarts?

My opinion on oil is 5/20 Mobil 1; have used that brand of full synthetic in different weights/cars for years with great results.

Mine takes 6.5 quarts at oil and filter to bring the level very close to full on the stick...does not hurt to leave a little under absolute full.

The correct capacity is 6 quarts. People put in 6 1/2 or even 7 quarts to get the dipstick to show full.(Dipstick does not read correctly at 6 quarts). I've always put in 6 quarts and never had a problem. My dipstick reads about halfway on 6 quarts. I put in a quart when it reads ADD.

I do 6 quarts also and mine reads a little under at 6 qts.

These pans I believe will hold 9 qts and somewhere on this site someone tested it. Unlike the old pushrod motors the crank is contained way up in the block and not partially hanging down in the pan so windage is no problem with a full pan. I have never tried 9 but I have always used 7, partially for the additional cooling, and partially because these heads hold so much oil that I don't want to have a drop in pressure or starvation issues in high G force situations. If I recall a number of people were having starvation issues in high G situations when these 4 valve motors first came out.

6.5 puts mine almost to the top, since i have had the car 2 years I finish it off with 7. 1/2 a quart across the whole surface area of the pan is negligible. Just my 2 cents. Mobile 1 5w/30 here for super hot summers.
