Re: 4.30's or 4.10

I filled up in Ga and drove to Al and filled up when I got off 27 MPG, driving 70 and 80 most of the way, before, I only checked once on the highway and it was 28 MPG. I drive 40 miles to work mostly back roads and a little city, I have averaged 23 MPG, the 3 times I have filled up. I was shocked, but 5th is very usable now.

I wonder if this because the engine is working harder to push or wind up the engine higher inbetween shifts with 3.55's and working less to push the vehicle with 4.30's as the gears being as tall as they are... makes the engine work less in return ? Thus giving better fuel economy. You achieve that speed faster with less effort on the 4.30's which articulates well with 4v technology. There is less wheel spin with 4.30's and more wheel spin with 3.55's. More wheel revolutions should mean more effort on behalf of the engine and its efforts to push weight. That is if i understand it correctly.

As I noted earlier, I got 20mpg in town every single tank with my 4.30s and I certainly didn't drive it like an old lady or anything.

Well..thanks to buzzsaw, my wife will be getting a set of 4.30s. And I would like to thank everyone that posted in this thread. Because before she made up her mind.....she read ALL three pages to get real life feedback.

THANKS AGAIN.

THANKS AGAIN.

I had 4.10's and than switched to 4.30's. I went slower in the 1/4 mile and my 60ft short time went up. I broke the 4.30's and now I put a set of 4.10's back in.
I did not care about the gas mileage what so ever so I can not comment on that. Drivability was better with the 4.10's. Not shifting as much in traffic. 5th gear is an overdrive gear and with the 4.30's it was like it was 4th.

I am sure if I would have given it more time or figured out how to launch on them, I may have liked them but like mentioned I broke them at the track and decided to go back to the 4.10's.

With my new clutch and drag radials I could not hook, kept spinning out of the hole.

This is just my take and my experance with 4.30's. Others have had success, I did not.

I thought about 'what if she doesn't like them'....my answer: I will just swap the complete rear from my car to hers. THen I will have the 4.30s and she will have the stockers again.

But thanks for the input....we like to hear any and all stories regarding them.

Yeah I'm looking into buying some different gears for my MAch1. I think i would like the 4.30's,but i just really need to know how they will do around town?Gas and Shifting wise?Really what is the best all around Gear to get for these Mach's? Is there a big difference between the 4.10's and the 4.30's?Like MPH wise at the track.I mean im keeping my car N/A for a long time so will 4.30's be better?:OUCH:

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

Just got back from a 1K mile + trip. With 4.30s and 70 mph cruising, 304.7 miles and the fuel light hadn't come on yet(23.73 mpg). Next tank was mixed city/hwy, 285.2 miles(20.25 mpg). Return trip first tank, cruising 72-80(hey I was just trying not to get run over;) ) 309.3 miles(24.31 mpg). The needle is sitting just to the left of half right now with 192 miles on the trip odometer(75-80 again so I wouldn't get rear ended). This was with luggage, full factory interior, spare, driver/passenger, etc..

BTW: it turned 20,200 miles.

Has anybody used 4.10s with a T56? Would that be a overkill for normal daily drivers?

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

4.30s non daily driver, but could be and not overwhelming. Feels like the car lost 800 lbs. very recomended.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

I dont wanna make a new thread so i figured I would post in here. I actually just purchased 4.10s to be installed along with a 31 spline setup. Only thing is im having 2nd thoughts and want to be sure before i get it installed. Just some info on the car its a daily driver with all the usual boltons, my main concern is 4.30s being to much with a 100-125 shot. Anyone with any advise, I also plan on building up NA with ported heads/fr500 cams so I know 430s would be better for the NA setup.

4.10s or 4.30s HElP!

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

I am thinking that I will be going with 4.10's. I know it is not a big difference between 4.30's and 4.10's but I want quicker acceleration while saving as many mpg as possible. This car will be going on the highway plenty. 3.55's to 4.10's will be a very noticable mod :weird:

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

I just did a round trip LA to Vegas in my 4.30 geared daily driver. the car got 22mpg with 2 people in the car and the AC running.

What do people get with the car stock? I think the idea of loosng gas milege by going to 4.30s is a little like sying the sky is falling.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

I went with 4.56's and just did a 100 mile round trip to the airport and back. Topped off the tank before I left, topped it off when I got back. 4.1 gallons to go 98 miles. I drove pretty much 70mph the whole way (2,600 rpm)

I have not tested it enough to notice a difference with city driving. But, I can now drive in 5th gear cruising at 45mph where before it would just bog with the 3.55's

I still haven't been able to control my right foot with it so I am pretty sure I could have done even better than the 23.9 mpg on the recent trip.

If you plan on staying N/A, 4.56's seem to be perfect! :)

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

I went with a 4.30 gear and have not noticed an increase in fuel consumption.
However, acceleration is drastically improved.

Thanks to everyone for posting up their experiences. Glad I went with the 4.30.

What is your top speed with the 4:10 ratio? I personally love to kick those ricers butt with top end speed at or near 150 mph. lol:D

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

Keep in mind the size wheels you have......the larger diameter the taller the gear you need. I run 20" wheels and wish I had gone to 4.56's instead of the 4.30's. But in the winter when the 17" wheels go back on the 4.30's will be more then enuff....

Re: 4.30's or 4.10

I just had FRPP 4.10's installed the other day and WOW..what a difference it is! Only mods are Borla Stingers, MAC O/R Prochamber and JLT RAI. The RPM's jump so fast and the car takes off. It's not sluggish after 3rd gear either. Before, I would be in 4th gear for example, and if I punched it gain some speed, it would take a little bit to feel strong. Now its strong all the time, through all the gears. I was doing about 25 mph this morning in 2nd gear, punched it to get around a truck and the rearend got loose. The traction control was on so it straightened right back up. I'm very happy with the 4.10's, even cruising at 70mph. I need to correct the speedo but Im trying to figure out what tuners in the area can do for me, without getting a dynotune right at the moment because I have a few small engine mods I want to do before I get her dynotuned.
