4.30's or 4.10
I'm tring to decide between the 4.30 gears and the 4.10 gears..could anyone help me out on this and tell my why you think one is better!

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
The choice doesn't work that way... Let us know how you want to use the car and we can then give our recomendations...

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
If you do a search, there are quite a few threads on 4:10 vs 4:30 gear selection/use.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
are you a stick or an auto mach1?
|
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
most of the stick guys i've heard that went w/ 4.10s wished they went w/ 4.30s

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
Thanks for the transmission ratio's Orange Whip! I've been looking all over the Registry for a thread containing that info.
EDIT: Just noticed you didn't list all the ratios for a 3650. Could you post those ratios for 1-4th gear in a 3650 if you have it? Thanks! :yeh: |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
Here you go
Gear Type 5 Speed Manual 3650 trans Final Drive 3.55:1 1st Gear Ratio 3.38:1 2nd Gear Ratio 2.00:1 3rd Gear Ratio 1.32:1 4th Gear Ratio 1.00:1 5th Gear Ratio 0.62:1 |

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
If I were going to seriously drag race my Mach, and still wanted 4.10's for street use....I would get 4.30's and some street wheels and tires about 5% more diameter than stock effectively giving me 4.10's for street use (4.30's 5% lower than 4.10's), and then correct speedo for 4.10's. Then use stock diameter race tires giving me 4.30's at the strip.
But with our .62 5th, if you like to drag race, 4.30's are not a problem for street use like in the past when OD gears were more in the .67 (T 45) and .68 (3550 and T 5). |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
I have to give 2 thumbs up to the 4.10 gears. I just had them installed last week and what a difference. :gears: To me, my Mach feels lighter and undoubtedly quicker. My biggest concern was the gas mileage, but this is not a problem @ all. I drive 100 miles a day and can usually get 285 miles out of a tank. I’ve been getting 275 since this install, but I've also been much heavier on the pedal. :10: IMHO the 4.10 are the best balance for a street car.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
This question has big a really big hurdle I haven't quite jumped yet. My buddy around town has 4.30's and loves them at the track, but come to highway draggin I always hear him talkin about.....
"waiting for someone to slow down so he could get into 3rd gear" I don't wanna have to wait for someone to slow down so I can get in a good gear to rape someone. I wanna be able to punch it and go. You think 4.10's then?? |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
I had both in my mach, and 4.30s are my preference. There is 100rpm difference in cruise RPM, big deal. As for the highway deal, its more of the same.... there would only be a couple hundred rpm max difference in third gear, so I dont see the argument.
|
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
4.30's all the way...
... maybe even 4.56's if you're serious about drag-racing. :smokin: |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
My car only picked up a few hundredths with 4.10's. I'd go 4.30's or 4.56's if I were doing it again.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
so what are the rpms like for city driving (35-50) with the 4.10's? 4.30's?
|
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
You can use 4th and 5th around town without lugging the motor when you have 4.30s, so cruise rpm is still very low.
Also, you're unlikely to see any change at all in your in-town gas mileage with the gear swap. I didn't. |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
Where the cheapest place to but 4.30's. Buying it soon need the info

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
The cheapest I've seen lately. Mustang Tuning
|
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
4.10s and 4.30s suck for roll racing(unless its 1st gear 10mph stuff), if that's all you're interested in then keep the 3.55s.
|
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
Where to buy the cheapest FR 4.30's? thanks
|
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
FYI if you are draging on the street at highway speeds the 4.30 's are to much gear IMHO. I had the 4.30's and changed them out to 4.10's because I travel with a group of Mach1's and Cobras. When you are crusin along at 65-70 mph and someone wants to get frisky you Will run out of gear way before you want to and they will walk by and wave at you when you shift into 5th. When you are figuring your speeds remember that 5th is over drive and it's useless in a race. I think with 4.30's top speed in 4th is about 119mph and with the 4.10's it's aprox. 126mph. If FRPP made 390's that's what I would be using.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
4:30s on street tires picked me up three solid tenths. Some will say traction will be an issue. That is a possibility every time you race, but if you know how to launch the car then your increase ...or should I say decrease in ET will be noticable.
I am so pleased with the gears that I would never consider changing to another size. Yes this is my daily driver. |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
I agree with gears being a great mod for the track. I picked up a good bit with the 4.30's and BFG DR's....I think it was about 4-5 tenths..... more than any other mods I have done. That being said I did find the 4.30's to be a very good choice in the 1/4 mi. and if that was my primary use I wouldn't of changed them out. I just found them to be limiting on the street because the street isn't preped like the track is. It just felt like I was always up against the redline and at times I needed more top end speed

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
Well, I don't know if anyone is still watching this thread, but I just got my 4.30's and moser axles installed today. All I can say is HOLY S^&#! Makes the car feel 500 lbs lighter and with great street manners. Granted you don't go as fast in each gear like the 3.55's but the acceleration is so much quicker it more than makes up for that only drawback. I highly recommend these for anyone who does more around town driving than highway, but also very good highway performance. Not as bad as I had expected.

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
to bad we dont have 9inch rear ends so we can swap out hog heads with diff gears when whe want. I remember my 72 Torino back in 83, on the weekends i had my stock 305s and on the weekend drag race adventure id put my 456 gear in, in about an hour!

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
On Mustang Tuning there is the FRPP gears and then the Motive Gears, theres is a huge diffrence in price? http://www.mustangtuning.com/rearend.html Will the motive gears still be good? does anyone have the movtive gears?

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
I put my old 4.10's from the coupe in a few weeks ago and clearly they woke up the car. For a dedicted street car they are IMHO perfect. If I were at the track and running the car on slicks, I would more than likely go with 4.56's. If our engine was a 7200rpm zinger than I would more than likely go with 4.88's or so for the track...
But, the 4.10s are perfect for me on the street... |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
Could someone with the 4.10s take a video of the gages while accelerating? This would help my descition between 4.10s amd 3.90s......

Re: 4.30's or 4.10
I am going to install 4.10s soon. I am auto and s/c'ed. I don't see how my car wouldn't run out of gear with OD off in the 1/4. I only got 3 gears... Anyone have the similar combo so I can tell what I'd cross the stripe at in RPMs?

It's worth noting that street racing at those speeds is stupid, though. Highway rolls should be left to Supras. |
Re: 4.30's or 4.10
[QUOTE=CMcCarthy]Not entirely true. Did you ever actually wind yours out in 4th and put it in 5th? I did with 4.30s and it still seemed to be pulling quite sprightly to me. 4.30 gears turn 5th into an actual useable gear for accelerating.
I have to disagree with you. I have wound mine out to 6800 in 4th at least 50 times and let me tell you that if there is another mach just off your quarter panel or a cobra chasing you down when you shift into 5th it feels like they turned on the boost or something. They will walk right by if they have stock 355's or 373's. It might feel like it is pulling quite "sprightly" but it isn't enough to hold off the highway geared cars. |

I have had 4:30's in for a couple of months, and it is my daily driver, It's awesome!!! I use 5th gear more than ever, I would mention my MPG, but I would get the :bs: , I'm very happy. I would recommend 4:30's, the only down side, I have a little traction issue :D .
