I put 5W-20 AMSOIL in last week. My temperture needle used to run dead center on the gage, during normal city driving. With the stock oil. Now its running about 2 1/2 notches cooler with the AMSOIL.

Metals conduct heat. The metal (aluminum) engine block touches both the oil and the coolant, so the temperature gauge reflects the relative temperature of the engine overall, not just the coolant itself. So yes, the temp gauge could show if a certian oil was making an engine cooler.
