Anybody painted their hood and trunk lid black like the '69 Mach 1? If so, would you post the pics?

Mach 1 deck lids were not blacked out. Only Boss 302's. Can't bring myself to doing a full blackout on the hood, althought the CDC car has something pretty close. Maybe Ford could consider doing this for the '04 cars?

Check the "ask Scott Hoag" section. I posted this question and the responce was,

"The Mach 1 rear spoiler paint code is “ABYGAA”.03mach1"

But, killer55 also responded "The Ford Code is (UA).
The Code Converted to PPG is 9700 Ebony."

This one looks black to me also. And the 2 '69 428 Cobra Jet Mach 1's that my dads friend owns looks like they have a black hood and trunk lid also.

Are you thinking about the TAIL LIGHT PANEL maybe?
-The rear spoiler and the tail light panel may be black, but the deck lid?

falcongtho3: I thought the CJ's had a black out tail light panel.

Those pics show the 69 Hood blackout, which we have only to a smaller degree.
The 70 had a even smaller blackout than the 03 ( and 70 was textured )

The Boss cars had the Deck lid and the taillight panel also blacked out.

The 69 & 70 Mach 1 had decals attached to the rear edge of the Deck Lid -- the decal was black and in the center

69 had letters " M U S T A N G "
and
70 had the letters " M A C H 1"

Both were Chrome letters, stick on or pin on

70 did have the Honeycomb taillight panel but the 69 was painted body color.

Not to me. To me it only looks like it has accent black paint. It looks like it is still red (like the rest of the body) around the hood's perimeter. In other words, it doesn't look like the entire hood has been painted black.

A majority of the '69 Mach I's hood is black. The large black portion stops and there is a tiny pinstripe that runs between it and the edges of the hood. But unlike the 70 and 03 Mach I hoods, but the 69 is 99% black. :)

Which brings me back to my original question, has anybody changed this on their mach 1? Or has anybody photoshopped a picture of this being done? I would like to see what it looks like on a '03 mach.

Because of all the lines in the hood, I doubt a full black-out would look all that attractive. Just my opinion, though.

Thanks for the save while I was away from the computer. I'm sorry, but Basic Car Stuff 101: Deck Lid is the trunk. The hood is at the other end! Boss 302's had blacked out deck lids and taillight panels. No CJ's came like that, sorry. The hoods are as advertised, body color on the '69 Mach with a predominant black out area surrounded by a black pin stripe. The '70 hoods were body color with a center stripe like our car, most had the engine size cut out of the stripe at the scoop. Unlike '69's, there were some '70's that had white stripes as well. :rolleyses

Thanks for clearing that up, falcongtho3.

I was curious about the 69's because I've seen quite a few 69 428CJ Mach I's that have the taillight panel painted black. The owners claim that this was done from the factory to represent its uniqueness.

on '69 mach 1's the hood and the trunk lid were painted black. These came from the factory like this. I know a guy that has 2 '69 Mach 1 428 CJ's that are completely original (save an air filter) that are painted like this.

The spoiler might be black. But the trunk lid did not come from the factory black. Unless the car itself is that color.

These two (and all the other ones I have seen) have trunk lids that are black AND they came from the factory this way.

Sorry, no. Never happened from the factory. The only CJ car that came with a black deck lid (TRUNK) was Larry Shinoda's personal car, and it was painted like a Boss 302 without the wording in the side stripe. I did black tail light panels on two of my '69's, and it does look good, but to get the factory black deck lids or taillight panels it had to be a Boss 302. These guys that are trying to pass this off as a factory paint are either uninformed or pulling someones' chain, either way they are incorrect.

Falcongtho3,

You're exactly right. I have a 1970 Mustang SportsRoof (63A) and the research I've done while restoring mine confirms everything you've said.

An interesting note: The 1969 Mach 1's did NOT come with the rear spoiler OR sports slats (window louvers). The only way you could get the rear spoiler was to order a Boss 302. Of course, in 1970, it became an option across the Mustang line, and no doubt many 1969 mach1 owners added this over-the-counter piece in 1970 or later, but it was not available from the factory as standard or as an option on the 1969 mach1's.

Even better, the early '69 Boss 302's had plastic spoilers that have managed to sag (badly) over the years. These are actually pretty desirable for '69 Boss 302 owners although most have been replaced with the heavier fiberglas ones that hold up well. Same things you've said here about the louvers and rear spoilers ring true for the Magnums that pop up on so many 'restored' cars...WRONG, never happened on '69 or '70 Mach 1's!

My car possesses all of the "overrestoration" qualities you describe...but I'm not saying that it's original. I've added touches to it that complete it in my eyes. Mine started life as a plain jane 302-2V SportsRoof, a cafè racer of sorts. It was Candy Apple Red, white standard interior, 14 inch wheels with plain hubcaps, narrow whitewall 70 series bias ply tires. I do however think that the dealer installed a hood scoop and painted the hood stripe on it, as the hood scoop is a factory ford piece (the hood under it was cut out by a previous owner, exposing the Ford numbers on the underside) and the stripe was the original type textured paint.
It is now Candy Apple Red with a gloss black hood stripe with "302" in the engine designation area, gloss black decklid, and gloss black taillight panel. It has front and rear spoilers, sports slats, and chrome 15" Magnum 500's (as opposed to the chrome rim/argent spoke Magnums that were most common, or the 69 Boss 302 optional Magnums with totally argent centers). The interior is a mix of black and white, with white door panels and rear interior quarter panels, white headliner, and white FoMoCo Pony floor mats (picked them up for $25, NOS...what a find!). The seats, carpet, and dash are all black. It has a JME Enterprises billet aluminum radio bezel containing an Alpine CD player that pushes 2 Alpine 4" door speakers and 2 Alpine 6x9's in the rear package tray.
The 302 is stock internally with a K&N air filter sitting on a Holley 600 cfm 4 bbl. that tops off an Edelbrock Performer RPM 302 intake manifold. Exhaust exits through Hedman long-tube headers, an H-pipe, and a true dual system, with tone set by the c-h-e-a-p economy turbo mufflers.

It's a great first car :)

Sounds like a car to be truly proud of. What gets me are the cars that are 'restored' and possess all the 'over-restoration' qualities that were never there to begin with. I was happy to see a Boss 302 for sale (a '70) with the 'dog pan' wheel covers that were standard, it also had no louvers and no rear spoiler! I have often though about building a 'Boss 302' or 'Mach 1' rag top replica, just for fun with no thought to originality or documentation. The last Mustang I had was a '69 428 CJ Q-Code Grande coupe, very rare and like so many others that belong to many here on the Registry, worthy of keeping 'correct' and original. Enjoy the ride!
