Is there only one manufacturer of Full Length Headers (BBK) for the Mach 1 ?

Be careful when you buy headers for your Mach 1, it has the same new heads as the '03 Cobra. The exhaust ports are shaped differently than the '01 and previos twin cams. JDM makes a set of headers for the '03 Cobra, which would work great on a Mach 1, with the new exhaust port design. They are made by KOOKS and are ceramic coated, they sell for $729. They are a great set of long tube headers and the coating will last forever unlike other non ceramic coatings that discolor within hours. They are also said to be easier to install than the BBK's. **** now this is starting to sound like an advertisement. Anyway just some helpful info. I am also in the search for the best long tubes for my Mach 1.

Thanks for the tip.

I have learned that Hooker now has a Header Set-up for our engines. It is also ceramic coated and has a matching off-road h-pipe. It is supposed to be a lot easier to work around. I will be checking it out later this week. (If I can find one.)

Tomcat,
It looks like alot more parts are starting to show up for the 03 Cobra/Mach 1's. I am almost sold on the JDM's . The Hookers shown in the photo look like they are welded in at the collecter.
Has anyone mentioned a price on the Hooker Headers?

The Hookers just came out, I personally don't like the idea of a 3" collector on my 4.6L motor. It's kind of overkill and will definately end up hurting the performance on the Mach. We will have to wait and see if they come out with a 2.5" collector. My .02 cents

Cobrajetguy,
With a 3" collecter then necking back down to 2 1/2" by rights this should increase exhaust velocity(good or bad?). Until someone dyno's some Mach 1's with the different exhaust set ups we won't know. It might be best to wait and see which set up works the best before I spend $1000.00 and find out I lost 5 horsepower.

I will wait a little longer as well. I am going to try and have my car dynoed again Saturday. local shop having a dyno day, 3 pulls for $25.

What's your guess at rear wheel HP now? 280-290.

your not going to loose HP with any header. anything other than the stock exhaust manifold is going to increase it. what you basically have to do is see if the gain in hp/tq justifies the cost. the collector diameter and length most likely has been tested (saw holley in action on the hooker with the 03) and is more than likely the 'ideal' size. (not to mention the very nice increase in tq, which all the mod motors lack...) the kooks 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 stepped header with 3 1/2 collector has generated 25-30 rwph gains on otherwise stock 99/01 motors (see SHM headers). if you plan on doing significant mods, a longtube header is going to increase the benefits of those mods. with the standard longtube, 1k is hard to justify on 15 hp or so at the wheels. but, if you add anything later on down the road, the benefit of the longtube will be seen.
YMMV

I just got off the phone with JBA racing here in San Diego and they would like to use my Mach 1 to prototype their 1 5/8 " headers. I can't tell you how happy this makes me. I have a set of their 1 5/8" on my 89' Gt and they work great and by the way that car can be seen on their web site, just go to gallery and click on my name. Here is their web site ; jbaheaders.com :) I get dyno numbers before and after.

Tomcat, that car will sound awesome and you should see a nice power increase. A word of advice, buy a vest because I can see an assassination plot coming from the neighbors.;) :D

Tomcat427,
What sold you on the Hookers over the JDM's or Bassani's?

Tomcat427

Well there are a couple of things.

1. The price was about the same, $699.00.(With the high temp ceremic coating.)
2. The preformance appears they will be about the same. (I will dyno before and after.)
3. Easy to work around.
4. I grew up with guys running Hooker headers. It just seems more retro to me. Same reason I went with the Hurst retro shifter pkg from team shinoda. I just think it sounds cool when I talk about my Mach 1.

I got an 03' Mach 1 with Hooker headers, Hurst shifter and 4.10 gears.

OK, it justs sounds cool saying I have an 03' Mach 1!

:D

Isn't life great!

Looks like I'm going to just go with the JBA shorties.. one good thing about having the engine replaced is that I'll be getting a sweet deal on the installation.

I'll let everyone know how they turn out. Although since I only got 41miles on the first time I won't have much to compare it to.
