One of my friends told me that after changing from the 5w-20 to a 10w-40 oil in his 4.6 engine that he had a engine knock. The Ford mechanic told him it was because of the tight clearances. Is there any validity to this?

Why in the name of God would he put 10W-40 in it for?? I used to put that in my 73 Duster 340 to keep it from blowing past the rings! Maybe I'm wrong, but that sounds way too heavy for that engine.

I never got a reason why he did it, but isn't the rule of thumb: higher RPM lighter oil?

I would say the mechanic was right there isn't much clearance in the engine. I really can't imagine why he would want to do that to the engine.:SMASH:

Either 5w-30 or 10w-30 will work well for the 4.6. 10w-40 is just not needed for that engine.

would be a good idea to follow man. specs,
the oil used is based on start-up properties
and clearances

My understanding is that 5w20 would give the best flow (especially at start up) and the least friction (for MPG and HP). The only time I would go with anything more viscous would be high temps or extended highway driving. And then, only 5w30.

One of the intial stickers was to ONLY used 5w20 semi-synthetic oil in the Mach1. I still plan to go to full synthetic at 5000 miles.

That reminds me, I'm still looking for that sticker on my car, and I haven't found it yet.

Black98GT,

Mine was in the glove compartment, I have no idea where it was supposed to be displayed.

I already did Ray, it's in my "My impressions so far thread" about half way down (http://www.mach1registry.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1581)
MOMach, now why doesn't that surprise me? The glove compartment? I thought it was in the engine compartment, but why would it be there, that would make too much sense. Thanks, I'll check the glove compartment.

Maybe I should clarify that :p

It was loose in the glove compartment with all the other sheets, stickers, tags, etc. I had asked them to keep all the papers it came with and they put everything in the glove compartment. Maybe they were supposed to put it somewhere but didn't

Its a good thing we can't be sued for whiplash, these cars really turn a lot of heads and it has caused three window conversations at stoplights already :machgod:

Well, I can't find it. Not in the engine compartment, not in the glove compartment, not in the console, not in with the paperwork, and not in the trunk. Guess they figured it wasn't really important enough to keep.
