When i did my 4.30's 3 years ago, i went with just a plan 31 spline cobra carrier. So, now with 30,000kms...it opens at the strip when heating up the slicks. But on the street it will spin 2 wheels all day. Who else has a Detroit locker? Worth rebuilding the cobra carrier or buy a locker?

I just got the Ford Racing 31 Spline diff with the carbon discs and Moser 31 spline axles. So i can't say. But that eaton detroit locker is supposed to be a monster, I just didn't feel like paying the extra money for it.

I wouldn't do a detroit locker in a car that sees any time on the street. Wouldn't want to go chirping the tires in every turn when the locker sees a load. Had a buddy who had one in his 03 cobra. Not my style for sure. Pretty old school drag technology, really.

School me how they work guys. I guess my buddy had a spool and thought it was a Detroit locker?

a spool is locked all the time.....both wheels are locked together at all times no matter what...a locker is locked up 100% of the time you are straight or spinning, it unlocks in turns for the wheel that is turning faster....but if you get on it and it spins you are locked again in a turn and you get to go for a ride!

Edit: after some close reading in the sh book, they can push in corner entry and snap lose during exit like m1m said. The push during entry can be useful, it allows the driver to feel the edge of traction in the front tires. Just have to be prepared for when you get back in the gas on exit.

I would consider a detroit true-trac instead. Not a locker but will still hold tons of power and very street friendly.

The Lockers work great... the downfall is the make some noise when they engage and disengage. if you can live a little clunking they are awesome! especially if you actually have enough power necessitate one! a mild street/strip combo... below 650 rwhp, I'd use a True Trac.

I ran the Eaton diff for about 6 years, 95K miles, 300 passes with 1.60 60 footers (nothing outragous). It let go two weeks ago. Now I have a True-Trac in it. Ran it at the track last week. Pulled a few 1.5x without issue.

I did not get a Detroit Locker because I did not want to deal with the noise created when getting on/off the drive line load.

So it's either a rebuild with carbon disc, or truetrac.

i have a detroit locker & i drive on the street. its fine once you get used to it it's like any part some will say it sucks some will love it. mine won't be coming out any time soon it does make noise but i don't care.all that maters is both wheels spin when i heat the tires & when i launch.
