View Full Version : Drag Slick Rubber

I had put on a set of MT ET Drags and did a "practice burnout prior to my next rack outing. I was amazed at how much rubber was slung onto the rear bumper cover and quarter panels. I ended up using some bug and tar remover to get it off of the cover and panels, but holly shizit is that stuff a pain to get off and I used PAM prior to the burn out! I ruined two towels as the rubber tended to smear once it was taken off with the towel.

My question is how do I keep from having this rubber all over the place? I was thinking of using some blue painters tape during my track outing as a means to help keep the clean up to a minimum...

What are you racing ballers using to keep you cars clean of the rubber?

just like you said i tape blue painters tape all over the fender covers and anywhere rubber can go.... just coat it on as much as you can!

TAPE is your friend. I am practically crying every time I have to remove rubber from my slicks off of my paint. Even worse was when I wanted to hang myself for the amount of rubber I got all over the rear of the car after I decided to roast a brand new set of Nitto 555Rs down to the chords during PSR's burnout contest last spring. :eyes:

When I was in the infantry we use to wear contact gloves (cloth gloves with rubber nibs all over the palms and thumb fingers)
I had an old pair kicking around so I put them in the trunk if I ever needed them.
One day at the track I did not have any rags and wanted to get the rubber off so I grabbed them and ran my hand across the rubber! Low and behold it flaked off and did not leave any smudges or streaks! The car had been sitting for a little bit so it was not the sticky fresh stuff. I would not try this when the rubber is hot as it will smudge and make a mess as you all know.

Long story short, I wore out the military pair and grabbed a pair from Walmart and they work awesome. I still have to use a little bit of the bug and tar remover for the tough ones but for the fresh bits of rubber that gather it works awesome. Just do not rub the panel hard. Sort of makes sense as the rubber nibs are contacting the rubber and it is peeling/rolling the rubber off of the car.
Warning: do not rub the panel hard as you will smear the rubber. Lightly run your hand over the area an you will see how much pressure you will require. And yes it does work! :)

Does the WD40 work well on getting hardened rubber off the inner fender wells? I've got some on the rear inner fender wells both sides and have tried bug n tar remover to no avail.

I can certainly understand that, but I am anal about keeping my car clean. As it is, I will to have to spend a day under the car cleaning out the rubber from the wheel wells, rear cover, and exhaust. Oh well, I look at it as "bonding" time with Jezebel. I am sure the wife will think of it as something elses! LOL

Awesome blown03mach1! thanks!

Not sure what for, but your welcome!

Thanks. I will look into it. I used WD40 yesterday and let it soak in for a few mins. Had to use a wire brush to get that hardened rubber off tho.

No prob. I used a circular saw and cut it in half and its the same width as the front bumper. My cousin and I used it on the way to Mustang week. Ran 800 miles both ways, one way in the rain, and not one piece came off. Just remember if you have to use multiple pieces, I've found layering them like a shingle works the best for no peeling.

Line lock testing, had to make it sure it works ya know! Murray Speed and custom carries it around here. I rubbed some of it off that night and waited for the next day to go after the rest of it. Used a scrub brush in the wheel wells to speed it along

Yesterday I stopped by a local Murrays to see if they had burnout guard and they were out.

On a side note, the sales rep also suggested to me spray the wheel wells with silicone spray and the rubber will wipe right off with a rag. I will have to give that a try before my next track outing. He also said he used WD40 on the body panels.

BTW I ordered the body guard and it shipped next day. I will give you all a review after my track day on the 16th of Jan.

painters tape is for just that, "painting". take some clear saran wrap (the cling stuff). just peels right off. A lot cheaper too.
I may start a new trend. :smokin:
